We visited closer to the evening, at 18:30 to be precise, having made a reservation a few days ago. When we walked in, the staff greeted us at a desk and told us to just sit anywhere, which was unusual for a reservation. There were multiple tables with revervation signs which we weren't sure whether we could sit at, one of which may have been ours, but there wasn't any staff to help us find a table. Upon ordering, we waited for a little while before being notified that there was no more dough left and they couldn't make any pizza at all. This was incredibly disappointing as we had relied on the pizza we ordered beforehand, and it would have been great to at least be notified when we sat down, or at the very least, walked in. The options of beer were scarce for a pub (no IPA at all), we expected more, but that wasn't the worst thing. The starters were pretty good (I'd recommend the halloumi fries), but the main meals had to be collected along with a bar of vegetables to add to it. The staff attempted to communicate when the food was ready for collection, but didn't do that very clearly so we waited an hour in total after ordering before we got the full meal. The carrots and beans tasted like that had been microwaved from frozen and left out to become cold, but the meat was pretty good, but little portions. An overall disappointing experience.

I can’t believe it . As soon as we entered we was place on a dirty table with cake , pens pencils and a plastic frog ?! A member of staff has left chemicals on the floor, over the time of our visit the majority of groups with children were put in this area THIS IS A HEALTH AND SAFTY HAZARD . The meat on offer was dry and old to a point where the carvers couldn’t even cut it - that is ignoring the attitude and clear “shaky ness” and darting eyes of these staff. There was one member of staff behind the bar and four other members all returned at the same time from their break- to say the least the one who had clearly been working alone was exhausted and upset. The service was so slow as a result and shocking. The Guinness my partner received was really light In colour to a point where we had to get his money back to which he stated that the food was also not great . Honestly , all members in my party wished we’d asked for our money back as we left hungry and disappointed . We did not ask as the staff were not approachable in any way. For the premium we paid for a carvery on a Sunday was not worth the money .

By using the 'Too Good To Go' mobile app where you collect a mystery bag from a shop, café or restaurant. They don't have to throw away or waste edible end-of-day fresh food or nearly end date groceries for 30 to 50% sticker price. Win, win, win. Rather than a few of the days leftover pastries, a walk up leafy Tongdean Lane towards the wide asphalt car park of the Withdean Sports Complex also brings you to the doors of The Sportsman (geddit? all athletics and stuff) and what could possibly be the last remaining option in the city from the once several fondly remembered venues offering daily roast dinners as a Carvery. Thick slabs of meat, roasties, all the different veggies, stuffing, gravy you can cut with a knife - even without pigs in blankets this dinner was bigger than the one I cooked for Christmas. Warm, welcoming, and cheery, the twinkly lights shine across the car park offering refuge from the encroaching evenings darkness where the staff have real smiles that reach their eyes and the dinner plates aren't the size of Old Skool jammy Wagon Wheels. Nom nom nom nom nom.

Well where do I start. Upon arriving at the sportsman it was not very busy however not one member of staff acknowledge our arrival which was a bit disconcerting. As a family of six we made our way to the table and sat down.

I haven't got a long time to write a full review however here are some bullet points.

1: we sat in a booth and they had some electrical works going on so the light kept getting turned off and on. 2: we had no waiter/waitress come and ask us if we needed anything. 3: when we went to order drinks the bar person kept yawning (although was polite) 4: we could see our food was ready and although the chef kept asking for service no one came so we decided to get our food ourselves which the chef said "I'm sorry this has been the worst lunch service I have experienced" 5: suddenly there was a loud drilling noise that disturbed and you could tell others around us. 6: we had no salt on the table(surly a basic) I went around all the tables close by to find some, eventually I found some on a table where an elderly couple had finished there meal and they were very polite saying they had to search for some themselves. Ironically we had 4 tables approach us to ask if they could borrow the salt from us, this is totally unacceptable. 7: my burger was a "dirty Philly" it was supposed to be topped with pulled pork, bacon cheese, onion rings and hash brown. Sounds nice right however it was missing the onion rings and hash brown, the chips were dry and there was no sight of any kind of garnish or salad. 8: not once we're we asked how the food was. 9: upon leaving not one person acknowledged us nor said thank you, in fact the women I assumed was the manager was head downing her laptop, while the staff were running around obviously oblivious to what was happen around her. We are local to this pub and don't get me wrong have had some food experiences but today has definitely given me second thoughts about going back. Maybe it's a change of management but customer service went out of the...

When being seated there was no explanation of what to do, was it table service or do we use the QR code. After waiting 10 mins we asked a passing female server who said we could order using the QR code, with no other explanation, however later we overheard another girl advising another new table they could order using the app or at the bar. Shows poor and inconsistent service.

We ordered using the website which was fine. Drinks came quick. Then one kids meal arrived, but not the other. We waited 10 mins then asked the same girl as before if the second pizza was coming, she curtly and immediately stated ‘yes’. We waited another 10 mins at this time, the second child was getting a bit upset. So I asked the pizza chef directly who said his order didn’t have 2 kids meals but he’d make it straight away. This finally arrived 10 mins later when the rest of the table had finished.

We had ordered 2 carvery’s but had no idea if we’d be given a slip or if we should show the receipt. No information given online or by a server. When the first of us got to the servery, there was only pork and turkey available and we were told it would be another 1.5 hours for new meat to come out. When the second of us got there, only Pork was available, which was very dry. At the same time the chef behind the pizza oven was getting very irate and animated about something, he was cursing and his behaviour front of house was completely unacceptable around families and children!

Overall we had a pretty poor meal and would not look to return. We regularly visit the Stonehouse in Peacehaven where we get table service, all meats are available almost all of the time and the atmosphere is lovely and very...

Not usually one to complain but what an absolute waste of money. The food (carvery) was dry and looked like it had been sitting there for hours and such a lack of options. Paid extra for pigs in blankets which were late (had to wait 10 minutes), undercooked and the ‘bacon’ was 99% fat. The server (lady with pink hair) has awful attitude and refused to give a small slice of gammon in my sons baby bowl that I ordered, despite the fact the place was literally empty and the food selection was lacking massively. Then when I asked for sausages and a little bit of gammon on my traditional carvery that I paid for, again she refused and argued with attitude and made me only choose one or the other. Which is disgusting as I have been to this location and many different Stonehouse locations before and have always been given the option of 2/3 meat choices. Once I chose said slice of gammon for my child, it was dry, crusty and cold and had to be returned. My grandmother couldn’t even finish more than 1/3rd of her plate as the food wasnt fresh at all and in her words ‘I’m trying to force myself to eat this awful food otherwise it’s a waste of money’. In the end she couldn’t even force it as it was making her feel sick. All in all spent about £40 visiting today which we might aswell have thrown down the drain. Might have just been a bad day but we will not be returning, Saltdean / Peacehaven are much better, always fresh food and the staff are 10x nicer and aren’t stingy...
