Overall was very disappointed with our stay at The Stables. We visited Whitby for a 4 night stay to see the local area and relax and unwind by the sea. The location of the hotel was good enough, (the beer garden was stunning, though it was a bit further from the actual shore than we had realised, the actual hotel and restaurant had some nice seating areas and was comfortable and with nice views), the room was ok (we had a very big bed which was wonderfully comfortable, the shower was a bit disappointing, the toilet was loose and wobbly, the road was a little noisy but easy to drown out and the motel style set up was a bit weird), the service was sub par and the food was very hit or miss. One particular staff member was very unprofessional (She had her uniform tied up at the back with a hairband to show off her lower back every day which was so strange. She also had a habit of making some left field or odd comments like "most people complain about staying in the room you're in" and while apologising for another member of staff serving our breakfast to someone else said "I'm sorry she's new and not very good" which felt mean and unnecessary) other staff members simply looked generally unhappy to be there.
Staff made a lot of mistakes and we were plagued with inconveniences for the duration of the whole visit. From our room not being serviced until nearly 4pm one day (and we had to forego the service as we were back at the room by this point. The following day, when the room was serviced - it barely looked as though it had been touched and I don't think it was even vacuumed, the shower hadn't been cleaned - which as an ex housekeeper wouldn't have been considered acceptable at the hotel I worked at, even for an occupied room), our breakfast being served to the people next to us (who either ordered exactly the same as us or ate the whole thing anyway, and they came in 20 minutes after us) meaning we had to wait nearly an hour to eat our breakfast that day, the final breakfast of eggs floretine was basically two boiled eggs, vastly overcooked (photo below of what is supposed to be poached eggs) and it was cold by the time it arrived. The beer garden is lovely but at one point the scan to order drinks system didn't work leaving us waiting for drinks outside for nearly 30 minutes before I went in to enquire only to find out the system wasn't working. The drinks were also eye wateringly expensive, so we only enjoyed a few during the whole visit. My biggest gripe was how much we paid for this hotel only to receive this kind of service. Over £700 to have a stay that left us disappointed and marred the overall enjoyable holiday we had. If this had been a Travelodge or a Premier Inn, I could perhaps overlook all of the above, but I did expect better from a supposed...

"quirky courtyard of stables-turned-rooms has sweeping views across the idyllic countryside to the moors beyond." is certainly pushing the bounds of reality.
In addition, because it's got a tin roof and the property is quite exposed you are often awoken by the tin roof rattling. But that's not all, the place is essentially a bird sanctuary, birds are nesting directly outside the entrances of the hotel rooms, this makes the roof issue seem like a minor inconvenience as you're kept awake further by the birds chirping, rustling and not to forget their signing at 5am.
To further your relaxing stay, the rooms are sweltering hot, there's no aircon, no fans, the insulation is so great that even an open window while you go for dinner doesn't cool down the room.
Water pressure is inadequate, the drains in bathroom smelled, so much so that even the towels on the towel warmer smelled of the drains. Fortunately there were some additional towels outside the bathroom to use.
Food was standard affair, on the pricey side, but you got plenty.
Now breakfast you might ask... Well you're only allowed to have your breakfast between 07:30 and 9:30 and you have to leave the room by 10:30. Meanwhile anyone roaming in from the main road can have breakfast until 11.
Now you ask, what did management do to rectify the situation. Nothing... I was met with defence from the outset. "you could have asked for a fan" , "we could have moved you rooms" (now here's the best part) if you were aware of the birds nesting there why did they put is in this room in the first place? (the same woman who checked us out, checked us in) Well "they're protected she protested" (they've had the issue for over a year) they can clear the nests in winter when the birds have left. You can see the review for room 104 from July on Google reviews.
Asked for compensation, she goes on to say she would only be able to issue a £15 gift voucher 😅. Laughable really after spending well over £200 for the room and then additional spends made on dinner and evening drinks.
I asked for reasonable compensation back to billing card, she was unable to and advised us to leave our telephone number and the other duty manager would arrange suitable compensation.
Did this ever materialise? No.
If you like sleep and want to enjoy your holiday,...
