We went to The Sun for a roast, after a long dog walk, with empty stomachs and high expectations after hearing goods things about the establishment.
Pleasingly, all of our expectations were met before being very quickly exceeded in the best ways possible.
We could smell the beautiful aromas of good, honest, hearty food cooking away as we approached the pub on foot and its charming, unfussy, interior welcomed us in, almost as warmly as the brilliant staff did!
I, along with the other carnivore present, opted for the Goat & Chickpea Stew to start which was the best decision I've made in a long time. Wafts of deliciousness instantly got me salivating as the plate was placed down in front of me. Although a simple looking dish, this belied a plate full of deep, immense, flavour. The kind of flavour that can only be imbibed through love and passion and feels like a it would cure any ailment you could walk into a pub with. I pretty much licked the plate clean - much to my fiancé's dismay!
I had the Roast Chicken for main after a long, meticulous, deliberation with myself and could not have been more pleased with my choice (despite a brief moment of doubt after seeing my mates Roast Beef being brought out first). It was a generous portion of half a chicken served on the bone (as it should be). The fat had been rendered expertly leaving a beautiful, browned, skin covering tender, juicy flesh. I'm not ashamed to say I was eating with my hands by the end to ensure I got every last bit of meat from the bones. The stuffing that came with my chicken was phenomenal. Homely, familiar, yet I'd never had stuffing like it before - a real treat unto itself. The gravy that smothered the whole plate was layered in flavour, unctuous and moreish and only encouraged me to wipe it clean with my fingers before licking them in a somewhat uncouth display of gluttony but when food is this good, who cares what anyone thinks, you just want to savour every last bit you can!
My vegetarian fiancé had the Polenta, Mushroom and Samphire which she didn't stop raving about all the way home. Although she wouldn't class it as a 'traditional roast', she made clear it was leagues above the 'traditional roast' vegetarian options she's often had to endure (I don't use that word lightly) at many other Sunday roasts we've been for in and around the Bedford area. It was its own thing and all the better for it but still managed to satisfy and warm the cockles like a good Sunday Roast should and left her with a huge smile and very full tummy.
The Roast Beef was cooked to a beautifully blushed pink and melted in the mouth. The meat itself was delicious and very obviously of great quality. The accompanying Yorkshire pud looked incredible but, seeing as there was only one on the pate, my friend was reluctant to share a taste but I'm reliably informed it was knockout.
The accompanying roast potatoes had a wonderful golden, crispy exterior covering hot, cloud like, fluffy potato inside. The roasted squashes and parsnips were charred expertly with soft, sweet, delicious flesh and the greens were fresh with just the right amount of bite.
The sticky toffee pudding my fiancé had for dessert was incredible. Rich toffee sauce smothered a generous, moist delicately spiced sponge which went down a treat accompanied by the silky vanilla ice cream.
All three of us waddled out, bursting at the seams, unable to eat a morsel more.
I cannot recommend The Sun Inn enough. The Chef is a great talent who pours soul into his food. The Maitre d' is warm and welcoming with an obvious passion for her restaurant. The staff attentive and friendly and the venue itself has a great charm that invites you to stay and enjoy the warmth and homeliness it emanates.
Thank you all for a fantastic Sunday afternoon, really excited to back and try the tasting...
Read moreSaturday lunch, 11 May. Having seen the menu online and checked this excellent small pub on Tuesday, ( see below) I came with my wife for lunch.
Headlines first. Great welcome again! Nice beer. Good choice of wines. Interesting and unusual and short, one page menu. Great service. Lovely dining room behind the cosy front bar, where you can also have a meal.
Detailed view. You can check on the menu online before you book but I can say that the rabbit & mustard pie was tasty and very well presented. You order your veg & potatoes etc., separately and all were nicely done. My lunch partner had the whole plaice and a tomato & basil salad but we had a portion of lovely salty fries, between us. All excellent!!!
Pudding was panacotta with rhubarb for her and marmalade steam pudding and custard for me.... a big treat, to be honest, as I almost never eat puddings, these days
Throughout the meal, before and after, service was impeccable by the two women on duty. Nothing was too much trouble and all came with a smile.
Not too expensive, either. We'll be back!!!
Tuesday, 7 May. Dad and son beer night and we chose The Sun at Felmersham, which has had a good reputation of late with CAMRA for it's beer and is now doing food as well. I haven't been here for about five years but have heard good things.
Beers available were different, interesting and we'll kept. Hornes of Bow Brickhill, Dark Star. This is a rather tasty 3.5% ABV cross between a dark mild and a stout. Excellent despite low ABV and I had a second pint as I wasn't driving. Also on (see photos attached btw) was a nice blonde beer which I didn't try but was apparently very good. There was also a cider and a few keg beers.
The Sun are now doing food and there is a sample menu online which looks very worth trying, so I'll update this review when we've eaten there. A couple at the bar who had just eaten were very complimentary.
Friendly staff and customers. Good knowledgeable barman. Honestly, what's not to like? Try it! I...
Read moreWe had a Wednesday night dinner here & thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were so lovely, answering any questions we had, being attentive, friendly & never pushy. Portions were generous, especially considering the absolute quality of the ingredients and flavourful dish produced! Really Devine flavours. We had the fish special & their classic rotisserie chicken (partner obsessed with the gravy!) + garlic bread, finished with the fig dessert to share. They catered well to my Coeliac disease, aware of cross contamination in fryers etc, the chef had anotated the menu which options were completely Gluten free (Coeliac safe) & separately which were 'gluten free' but shared fryers with gluten containing foods (not Coeliac safe). There were plenty of Coeliac safe options for me to choose from on main menu & specias menu. All was well. The menu is small but has a few classic staples like burger & their chicken, plus a few more adventurous dishes (rabbit, goat & octopus were on ours I believe). Menu seems quite seasonal. We sat in the restaurant which was beautifully decorated. The garden looked far more extensive than we thought having walked past, with a covered & uncovered area. Super popular pub restaurant, & rightly so. Highly recommend pre-booking a table. Have recommended to family and friends. Thanks so much...
