This pub's "piece de resistence" is supposed to be the carvery whereby you help yourselves from a selection of cooked vegetables after the chef has served up your choice of meat, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. The carvery food (either roast beef or pork) was just okay, with the beef being a bit tough. Beware: you only get 1 slice of the meat and when I requested a further slice, I was reluctantly given a very thin further slice. When we went to help ourselves from the accompanying hot counter there was no stuffing, apple sauce or crackling left. There were a few dried inedible roast potatoes left which were eventually replaced by a "new" batch of stale greasy potatoes. The vegetable selection was not much better; a complete mushy mess. The chef kept vanishing into the kitchen leaving us waiting around. My 5 year old son's meal, from the very limited and unhealthy children's menu took an eternity to arrive, which was cold ham and chips....and it wasn't even as if they were at their busiest time. Why it took so long to fry up a batch of tasteless chips and cut up a piece of (cold) ham (although not stated as such on the menu) is beyond me! There were only 2 waitresses available serving the whole restaurant and 1 barmaid, so service was very slow and confusing. 1 star is being generous as the review did not allow me to score "zero" stars. Generally overpriced for what you got. Very disappointing meal and a complete waste...
Read moreGreat pub, friendly staff and nice atmosphere! I usually get overwhelmed by environments like this, but I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t on this occasion. I booked a table over phone a few weeks ago for 8pm for Mothers Day. We turned up early and was greeted and managed to be seated early. It was my first time here so wasn’t really sure how the carvery worked, but the vegetarian option was explained to me and a green card (green card for the vegetarian options) was given to me and I went up for the food. I’ve got to say this is one of the best carvery’s I’ve had in a while. I thought because we were there half hour before end of service we wouldn’t get fresh food. Instead, it was fresh, really hot and delicious. The vegetarian gravy option was taken to our table and we had a generous portion of food. A lovely lady came and spoke to us at the end of the meal and gave us some love heart sweets (I wish I could remember her name) but she was lovely. Overall, I’m really impressed. The area is great for a nice walk into Dorchester along the river. We took our dog out an hour before our meal and...
Read moreWe visited for a carvery after reading the glowing reviews, but our experience couldn’t have been further from what was promised. From the start, service was non-existent – we had to ask for someone to even take our order. When we went up for the carvery, there was no one to serve, and after an awkward five-minute wait, a man eventually appeared to carve the meat.
To make matters worse, we weren’t even allowed to decide where or how much gravy we wanted – it was poured straight onto the meat, leaving the vegetables completely dry. The food itself was nothing short of dreadful: stale Yorkshire puddings, raw potatoes, and “cheesy leeks” bizarrely bulked out with peas.
We hardly ate any of it and quickly asked for the bill, only to be ignored not once, but twice. In the end, we had to walk up to the bar ourselves. At no point did any member of staff check on us, ask if the food was okay, or show even the slightest interest in customer service.
Almost £50 for a meal like that feels like daylight robbery. Terrible food, poor service, and an experience we won’t...
