Booked for christmas thought we would give it a chance as farmers arms was fully booked .We turned up to be offered warm volovants ,didnt dare risk eating these incase this awful venue ended up making me ill and ruined more of my christmas .Next was half a glass of prosseco which was nice but a tight serving Then a 30 minute wait for starters .The starter came i had soggy sliced ciabbatta bread (supposed to be toasted) and some horrible shop bought chutney and a tacky supermarket pate which i left ,not worth the calories.Mum had a soufflé which was served on soggy lettuce and was like a shrivelled up stodgy lump of glue trully hideous (note to trumpet souffle is based on the french term soufflé, it means to puff not collapse) .Father unfortunately had the worst of the bunch a lump of guacamole with some tiny watery prawns more than likley north atlantic prawns but passable as shrimp ! On top with a smelly green looking shrimp ,vile and there was not a hint of crab it apparently was stirred into the guacamole very odd and was disgusting .We tried to remain positive for the main but again we were in for another punishing course it was similar to being on im a celebrity get me out of here ,im a fully qualified chef and i do not believe in running places down for fun if its good ill tip and give praise as i know how difficult it is working at xmas but for me to leave a review like this trust me it is necessary to help others avoid a shocking dinning experience like this. The plates are hot we were told ,ok, touched them one was stone cold and all had dishwasher machine water around the rim ,the roast pots were black and cooked days ago the cabbage was vile covered in mustard seeds the carrots were dirty the stalk not removed and earthy tasting .The gravy was nice but too salty in my opinion the sprouts were fresh from the field raw not prepped correctly ,turkey was nice the sausage was naked its bacon was hidden somewhere amongst the veg and the parsnip was not roasted long enough to caramelise so anemic but edable. There was not enough gravy so i asked for more a tiny milk jug was produced half full amazing .Then the 40 minute wait for the worst dish of all ,i had ordered a choc orange mousse and got a couple of slices of what i know to be choc ganache how bizzare it had a twist of orange on it and a nice 80's style choc sauce zig zagg 😃.It apperared to have some sort of cake like ingredient in it i couldnt say for sure but it was not orange flavoured and didnt belong in a mousse .The mousse was like two semi warm slices of chocolate stodge it was nothing like a mousse (note to trumpet cook-because your certainly not a chef, a mousse is a light airy soft dessert light as a feather and usually is served in a bowl not on a plate lol.Mum and dad were treated to a dish of stewed fruit topped with blended up biscuit ??? Not a crumble by any shape of the imagination. We left hungry and declined to even attempt what i imagine would of been a selection of the finest local supermarket cheese's but thats my guess not a fact .We brought up are disatisfaction to a youngish male member of staff with an earring and goaty beard now this is where my patience was tested my mother said it was an awful meal he muttered oh ok ! No apologie i didnt want to make a scene but they then presented us with the bill and expected the whole amount !.I then stepped in and said what was that dessert supposed to be ? He said a frozen mousse lol i said you frozze a mousse its not possible im a proffesional chef and that was ganache an he said well everyone loves it and says it tastes lovely thats why its on the menu every year .I replied i didnt know there were so many people around with no taste ,he replied well there clearly is .I said what was on that crumble he said biscuit and nuts ? I said thats not how you make crumble ,he said if you say so ! I couldnt believe this guy was answering back and getting argumentative i was shocked no apology no refund and a load of cheek.Dont waste your time life is precious far too precious to waste...
Read moreWhere do I start. Awful Meal this evening. My husband ordered a chicken curry and I ordered a sirloin steak to be cooked medium. The meal arrived and we were asked almost immediately if our meal was ok to which we answered yes. Unfortunately this was premature. As I attempted to cut my steak I was struggling with grissle and fat. I realise that a sirloin can have fat especially around the edge but this was quite extensive through the steak. I ate what I could and called over the person who appeared to be in charge. I explained the situation and she said she would mention it to the chef.on clearing the dishes she informed us that's how it comes and sometimes you get a bad cut. Due to our experience we decided against desserts and more or less immediately we were presented with the bill and got the feeling we weren't welcome. I did ask if there was a possibility of a small reduction or anything could be done to be told no that's what happens sometimes. I said a good chef should notice a bad cut and it shouldn't be served. She said thats what sirloin steak is to which we replied I have had many a sirloin steak and had not had a problem before. I then asked if she was the owner to which she replied no. Can I suggest the owner gives this person a customer services course as she was rude and certainly did not care about customers needs. After quite a few words which were getting a bit heated due to her attitude unfortunately we had no alternative to pay the bill and leave. We will certainly NOT be returning to this establishment and will pass on our experience to anyone else that is thinking of visiting. A bad meal can be experienced we are not denying but argumentative and unsympathetic attitude from staff is definitely not...
Read moreUpdate 2: We went back and it was very much improved. Everything has been spruced up. The food was lovely. Good pub grub. Staff attentive and efficient. Nice selection of drinks.
Update, obviously my scathing review along with the many others, from over a year ago, did the trick and the place has been taken over by an excellent team. The recent reviews praise the place and I can't wait to go back and see the transformation. Bad reviews do change things. I'll give it a star rating when I have been. I went there today but didn't realise that it opens on Wednesday.
Have driven past this place many times. Such promise, from a distance, of old black and white charm and possibly good home cooked grub. What a disappointment. The car park is unkempt and overgrown with weeds at the main entrance, an instant indicator of whats inside. The interior decor is in need of an update or just a freshen up at least. A very uninspiring range of beers and same for the menu. We stayed for one drink and didn't even consider staying for a meal. On the plus side: there were many occupied tables in the 1980s drab dining room. It is a place where you can go with your young children with no worry about accidental mess. The sort of place I went with my children when I didnt have much money but needed to get out of the house. Cheap and friendly. I feel sorry for the person who cleans the place. It is probably very clean, it seemed to be, but still looks grubby. The menu is basic and I cant comment on its quality as we didnt stay. I guess, if it was taken over and given 'the treatment' there would be equally but opposingly...
