We've been wanting to try The Vale of York since it was taken over so we decided to go for dinner on a Wednesday evening. We were greeted by a friendly lady who got us our drinks, we asked to put them on the bill as we were eating but were told we had to pay straight away as they don't do bills. We chose our meals and also had to pay straightaway. Our meals arrived quickly and all looked very nice. My husband had the vale burger which he said the bread bun was stale or it had been defrosted in the microwave so was hard, the inside burger and salad were very good. My daughter had lasagna which she said was nice. I had hunters chicken. I was a little confused and disappointed as it was just a chicken breast covered in melted cheese woth a bitbof bacon. No BBQ sauce under or over the cheese which is what hunters chicken is supposed to be. The chicken was dry and hard around the outside too. We had desserts ....choc brownie x 2 one with a scoop of ice-cream and one with cream , no effort had gone into presentstion at all, and 1 brandie snap basket filled with one scoop of ice-cream. A few blueberries and strawberries. They definitely were not worth the £6 each price and wish we hadn't bothered. Considering the most expensive thing on the menu is chateaubriand at £65 the puddings would be an embarrassment if served after having that. Our total bill including drinks was £66.50. I know things have gone up, but you expect the food to be excellent in a pub that also serves an expensive menu. The food was almost average. We definitely won't be going again which is a shame as it's our local and we like to eat...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAN AWFUL PLACE TO STAY! First of all the person who checked me in told me it was their policy to take full payment before I had seen the room. She gave me the key and showed me to the door of the room but that was as far as she went. I had room No 4 which absolutely stank like a dirty dish cloth and I could smell it all night long. There was a huge stain on the carpet in the corner near the window and toilet. The kettle was covered in dust and you couldn't fill it up in the sink so I don't think anyone used it plus there was a huge amount of coffee and milk which seemed to be just buiding uo because noone used it. The bed stunk along with the bed sheets and towels. The wardrobe had no doors and was also stained so you just felt totally unclean while in there. My neighbour in one of the other rooms said their kettle was on the floor in the corner and when they moved it there was a load of dirt and rubbish behind it. There's nowhere to put your toiletries in the bathroom apart from on a boxed out pipe along the floor which is not good. You can't leave your toothbrush on the sink because it is too small to hold even a bar of soap! I had a shower mat/towel the first day but when the towels were changed on the second day they didn't leave another one. The room where you eat breakfast is very close to the toilets and there was a strong smell of the disinfectant urinal blocks immediately as you enter the room. I had to sit really close to the kitchen door in order to stay away from the smell.
No wonder she took the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDropped in today just because we were looking for somewhere different. We checked the menu that had a good choice but not massive or pretentious. The long haired Colonel chose the Vale slider and I went for the Monster fish and chips, we both had a pint of lime and soda, the whole cost was less than 36 pounds. Food took a little while to arrive, however they were quite busy. It was well worth waiting for, absolutely amazing quality and really well presented and served hot š„. I managed both fillets of fish but surrendered part way through the chunky cut chips unable to eat another mouthful, the Colonel loved her slider that was served in a brioche bun with chilli cheese, bacon and salad also with the perfect chunky chips and a side salad, unfortunately she too was unable to eat it all, not a quality issue just the size of the portions with 2 thick burgers in the slider. Spoke to the guvnor when we were leaving, and he said they had been there about 18 months, they are doing an amazing job and deserve a visit if you are in the area. Just a very short walk south from the station and really not far from Thirsk races, they also have letting rooms for passing or visiting travelers. Give it a go you...
