The White Horse — Restaurant in England

I really wanted to like this place, but had such poor experience! Long wait for food and drink, despite it being very quiet. 20 minutes for a hot chocolate?! When food arrived, the meat was overcooked and dry, and no sauces offered. No one was checking in on our table, despite being the only one in the restaurant at this point! We finally flagged down the waitress and asked for water, but it never turned up and we gave up waiting. But it gets worse... We then went up to the bar to pay and noticed the woman who served us slouched over the bar eating what looked like leftovers, whilst other staff were struggling to use the till, and the only person serving drinks just serving people at the bar. It had already been about 15 mins since asking for a simple glass of water at this point. There were other people at the bar asking for table service too. Walked away thinking I am definitely not going...

This was our 2nd visit. First time they had run out of everything apart from burgers, when we said we would give it a miss they said if we waited 30-40 mins they would make fresh sauce for the dish, we waited over an hour but the food was ok when it eventually arrived. Went again tonight, they had run out of what we wanted again, I ordered Peri peri chicken instead & the Vegetarian burger, waited over an hour, the very helpful barman said chef was not happy with it & had started again. I got a burnt piece of tasteless chicken with absolutely no peri peri sauce, I didn't eat it, my wife's burger was dry and tasteless she left most of it. The guy serving was excellent he knew we were not happy, he didn't even ask if everything was OK as he knew it wasn't, never ever again & I have just called all that we suggested trying the place to avoid...

Okay, this place is special. A small local British pub serving delicious and varied South African cuisine? Yes please! The food was awesome, but special shout out to James who served us and was the best ambassador and cheerleader for them. He told us all about the food, gave recommendations and clearly cared a LOT about what they’re doing here to make it so special. Back to the food: it’s amazing. So interesting and smoky and flavourful and a million miles from the peri peri I’ve tried before. The burger was delicious but be prepared to make a mess! The halloumi fries weren’t just sad slices of halloumi: they are battered and the flavours are balanced with the pineapple salsa and sauce on top.
