After not having visited Cornwall for many years my partner decided to book a table for us, both him and his family exclaiming about its excellent unique style, food that is out of this world and unbeatable service in his eyes. Upon entry, we were greeted by a smiley lady who seated us with a finger bowl and took our order. It was already known that we were to eat with our fingers and this idea was quite fun and jovial. However that’s where, I’m afraid, my positivity comes to an ends. Immediately the ‘medieval tavern’ became inauthentic, ruining any immersion with the playlist of popular pop songs, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and other artists that don’t fit the theme of the place. Maybe I am just being particular but I personally don’t want to be listening to this style of music in a tavern aesthetic. The pop music cut through the air, making simple conversation tough. After ordering what was labelled as ‘coke’ and ‘diet coke’ on the menu, we were surprised to see that the bubbles had immediately disappeared upon drinking and that the ratio of Co2 to syrup was off and the drinks went flat immediately. Not only that but the drinks themselves tasted funny as if the knock-off brand ‘coke’ - ‘Cola blue’ was being served instead of what was advertised. Then came the food Frozen. Frozen. Frozen. No, the food itself didn’t come out frozen but it most definitely was cooked from the freezer, with it arriving ten minutes after ordering. The old saying goes “if fish smells fishy it isn’t fresh” applied here and the ribs looked as if they had been bought from a local Tesco. The ‘fish fries’ were just chunks of fish, leaving me confused as to what the ‘fries’ part of it meant. Maybe the fries were the chips it was served with, I genuinely have no idea. Not even the tartare sauce tasted fresh, and it really left us with a taste of dissatisfaction, not even craving a dessert. I am so disheartened to leave such a terrible review amongst all the positive but I genuinely do believe this place would be so much busier if a few simple changes were made, and I’m sorry but for these prices and the reasons I don’t think I will be returning until changes have been made.

So adendom to my previous recommendations...now 37 years after our first visit and whilst this venue has changed hands it is still the same family running the business just a different branch. The magical atmosphere and the quality of the mead and mead/fruit wines and the marvelously enjoyable food menu has not diminished one iota my personal favourite over many years has been breaded mushrooms with garlic mayo followed by the most delicious fried chicken quarter with chunky fries and salad then topped off with a rum and raisen ice cream meringue glace with clotted cream usually sprinkled with great company. The staff are super friendly and attentive, cost being for a very generous 3 course meal with drinks around £25 per head... cheaper options available including kids menus. It's the sort of place that memories are made and generations of families return year after year. Well worth a vist not forgetting to bring your fingers 😋. The atmosphere and the food and the staff and the drink and everything will just keep me going back at every given opportunity. Oh and do not forget to write something in the guest book as its such fun to find our families past comments dating over 4 decades. Go. Relax. Enjoyed. Book early. Have a designated driver. 🥰

What a fab find! Pre-booked a table 2 weeks ahead of holiday and so pleased we did. This meadery is set in an old Chapel and kept all of the features. All lit by candlelight and kept old Chapel seats. Great atmosphere - would be great to have a medieval night here! Service was fab and owner very attentive. 3 of us had the chicken in the rough which was delicious but very filling...may just go for the quarter next time 🙄 Had a "proper" prawn cocktail for starter just like we have them at Christmas from the 80's. Simple but gorgeous food cooked well. Tried some mead which was lovely...recommended the blackberry which was like a desert wine. Parking a bit tricky as you're in a tiny cornish village but the owner let us park at her sisters place! Thank you to all. Great evening!

Yet another visit here, just can't keep away. Service from the moment we entered until leaving was again exactly as it should be, friendly, polite, warm, welcoming and prompt. The food was hot, very tasty and the portions generous. The Mead was flowing with first time visitors trying a few different flavours whilst those of us who had been before were quickly into our favourite flavours. Whilst cutlery can be asked for and used when we go we save on the washing up (apart from desert) it all adds to the atmosphere and experience that this setting gives. The first time visitors in our group of 8 said that they loved it and thought the food, setting and atmosphere was great and would recommend it to friends and family when they come to Cornwall. Those of us who had been before agreed we were not disappointed could find not fault and would definitely be back. I would suggest anyone thinking of going call and make a reservation as it does get booked up. Whilst I have never not been able to park it can be a little tight if...
