Went there as it is fairly local to me, but was turned away for having "no space" (the garden was empty - not 1 person in it!). I was told to go to the worst pub in the area (Fox and Goose), so I decided I would rather just go back home and have some food there! Shame as I had heard good things about the place.
Following the reply from the pub I am adding that I am local. I live 4 miles away, and have done for over 40 years, and your wife has in fact met me before, when you ran the Acorns (which was a very welcoming place), so I am warning anyone who has a less than perfect experience at this pub, you leave a less than perfect review at the risk of receiving a very long and blustering account of how apparently hard it is to run a pub. I was not rude at all to anybody at your pub, and I stand by my comments. Your website does indeed say that bookings are recommended, but the advice given was at best pitiful to go to another pub (especially one which is awful!), and particularly a pub that we have to go past to get to your pub! I get that the pub trade is hard work, and I get it is difficult in these times, but your scathing and vitriolic reply based on secondhand information really does show that perhaps you are imperfect when it comes to customer service. Alas, reviews are a way of encouraging people to share experience, and give opportunity to businesses to maybe learn from experience too. Alas the time (something which you say you do not have much of) you took to rant about the review could have been used much more productively by reflecting rather than going off on a tirade of information which is clearly very close to your heart, but which can only be made worse by making people feel that they are not welcome. You sir, were not party to the conversation so as far as I am concerned, your reply is going to be treated with the contempt it really does deserve. Like I said in the review, it is a shame as I had heard good things, but you have chosen to show your true colours by trying to treat a potential customer with the contempt which he and his family now will treat you with. Good luck finding time to read this. Review now...
Read moreFantastic Sunday lunch, extremely well cooked and delicious! An otherwise perfect lunch was sadly spoiled by a couple of things. Unfortunately, my Sandford Red Devon cider was a little flat. The young waitresses were very helpful and competent, but halfway through the service a man with a beard appeared, helping the Front of House (FOH) staff. Sadly he lacked any manners or basic FOH knowledge and tried to clear our table before I had finished my food, pulling a face when I asked him to stop. The elderly lady who appeared to own the pub must have had a personality bypass...we could not get her to smile or be chatty under any circumstances! Also she tried to charge us £24 each for the Sunday dinner, despite the menu clearly displaying the £21 price. Not entirely her fault as staff had obviously been handing out old menus with the old price. No wonder she wasn't happy!.. We gladly paid the £21 per roast because it was delicious, but £24 for a Sunday Roast?! I'm afraid that's a...
Read moreUtterly tremendous food! It was so good, we brought back the family members we were visiting. My wife had the Bangers and Cannon both nights - the cannon is worth the visit all by itself. We also had the sticky toffee pudding, which is hands-down the best one I've had. Probably unhealthy, so I added the pouring cream option! The atmosphere rating gets 3/5 stars, but I hasten to add that's not a bad thing. The pub was hardly empty, but it wouldn't surprise me that the major draw (the food) keeps the punters quiet...
