Where to begin? What a pub!! In short, I would highly recommend you stop here, you will no regret it.
We happened to be staying in the local area and thought we'd pop in for a quick pint, only to stay for several hours because of the fantastic welcome, brilliant atmosphere and perfectly kept beers.
The pub itself was saved a few years ago by the locals, and this community spirt and camaraderie is evident from the moment you walk through the door. Unlike many "local" pubs, where everyone in the pub turns around to stare when new folk walk in, the welcome here couldn't have been different. The pub is staffed by village volunteers, with a permanent landlady and cook, and everyone is incredibly welcoming. They do tasting flights of beer, at very reasonable prices, they have various different themed nights, excellent food and on Tuesdays I'm told you can take in fish and chips from the local chippy van and eat them in the pub. There's a great atmosphere about the place, even in the middle of the afternoon when most other pubs are rather dead. Having had such a lovely experience I'm now trying to persuade my wife to move to the village so I too can volunteer behind the bar. I should also mention across the road is an excellent park which will entertain the kids for hours. Thank...
Read moreWest Dorset CAMRA pub of the year 2023, mercifully rescued from closure by the good people of the local community. This pub is tied to the Palmers brewery, but that’s no bad thing - my two pints of ‘Copper’ Pale Ale were in fine form.
As is often the case nowadays, be it economic imperative or local preference, the pub is dining-focused and has been configured into a single large room with an identikit interior. As a result, it does lack some of the atmosphere of a traditional country pub where saloon, snug and dining room are separate.
That being said, the food was home made, cooked to order and of a high standard; and the service was warm, friendly and attentive. If it was up to me, I would turn the lights down and the music off. Nevertheless, it’s a great blessing that this pub’s future has been secured. Well done to...
Read moreWow! What a transformation! This is now a clean, friendly, spacious, community owned and run pub, albeit still a Palmers tied house. It has been completely but sympathetically refurbished and redecorated with more room created for customers by reducing the size of the bar and changing its shape. A doorway has also been closed off so access to the toilets is no longer via walking through the dining area. The beers seem to be well kept, so they should be able to regain a previous 'Cask Marque' award achieved several years ago. The kitchen is currently being updated and full refurbished, so no food at the moment. I just hope that the food, when they start doing it, is good quality, honest, pub food and not the grey, tough, tasteless, and tepid offering that the previous...
