Went down saturday the 30th december, without any reservation at around mid day, we were greeted by friendly faces who explained nicely there would a wait for food as there were a large group who had pre ordered.

We had our drinks and sat for around 15 minites ti then be seated and sjow the menu which was absolutely fine, as said, we hadnt booked any tables so we expected a wait.

I ordered the rump steak, medium with peppercorn sauce. It took a while to arrive, but the place was slowly becoming busier and from what i overheard some staff had called in sick so i beleive their may have been only a small team on, but when the food arrived it was amazing. Presentation was the best, it was cooked perfectly, the sides thst came with it were brilliant and hot. Everything was brilliant.

It was all so good how could we say no to dessert. Of the group we tried the bayleys matleaser cheesecake and the pecan brownie. The cheesecake was so good (as was the little shot of baylesy that came with it) thepecan brownie looked warm and gooey, and the sauce was rich.

I would honestly say this was one of the best meals weve had in a long time, sadly i didnt get any pictures of the food as it was too good looking to wait once it arrived.

All i would say for anyone looking to go, it is a bit more exoensive than certain places, but you pay for what you get here, and what you get is great and worth it.

Will be returning...

Looked nice enough but staff made very sure we were uncomfortable enough not to actually stay. We were told that the tables for dining were all booked (fair enough). When we asked if we can stay at the bar just for drinks, were told all bar tables are taken. When asked if we can stand at the bar or if we just can't come in at all we were told it's ok to come in and stand at bar but that all tables are booked (that was already understood by this point) . While walking towards the bar - it was again pointed out that the empty tables we were walking past were booked, not that anyone asked again or try to sit at one. Upon saying that we understood that already and asking the other member of staff who was at the bar if we can just stand there and get some drinks, she saw fit to take a condescending tone to say "we don't have to be like that because her colleague was only telling us that the tables are booked". We got it already...he said it 7 times, and quite frankly, if you didn't want any more custom you should have just turned us back at the door . Appreciate it might be a popular place during the weekend due to lack of alternatives in the area, but I'm sure in the long run the lack of staff education or just genuine hospitality will start to bite.... maybe it's...

What a find! We had opted to holiday in Clearwell so thought we would try the local pub and attempting to book a table on a Tuesday proved difficult which spoke volumes! The pub itself is beautiful: charming, warm and welcoming; tastefully decorated with subtle modern decor in a traditional beautiful stone building, and from the offset, staff were charming, attentive and ready to make every aspect of the visit perfect. Even the music could not have been any better! The menu looked appetising and, as the name suggests, is very meat heavy. It did not disappoint: a simple menu but no aspect had been neglected in the planning and preparation. Fat chips, thin chips all fluffy and crispy, burgers to die for, the sides were all fresh and tasty. I am admittedly hard to please when dining out as there is so much dross out there but, as much as I did try, I could not find fault with the building, services or food, especially as they were clearly short staffed. Thank you, we...

We saved this place for our last night in the Forest of Dean and I’m glad we did. I’m surprised it’s not on a list of one of the best places to eat in the UK! The pub is superb, we were left very full, satisfied and speechless at the choice, quality of food and service. We had the following dishes, melted Angiddy cheese wheel with bread, oil and onion marmalade, salt and pepper calamari, both were outstanding. Mains were 10oz ribeye, fish and chips, steak and ale pie and the kitchen ribs. Ribs fell off the bone, steak was so tender a steak knife wasn’t needed, fish was bright white and flakey and the pie was a thin crust and full of filling. The chips were incredible and the little side salads were a perfect accompaniment. This little pub made a fantastic end to a superb holiday, thank you to all at the butchers arms….this place is a must, please go if you’re visiting the Forest of Dean.

We had 4 meals, a starter and 3 puddings here and each was mouth watering they were well presented and tasted better than they looked, the waiter was attentive despite being rushed off his feet when the.chance arrises we will be.going back. **Update we re-attended on the 9/04/2023 expecting great things after our first visit, and we were all left feeling deflated, the staff were as friendly as before but not as attentive we waited over 10 minutes for our second round of drinks even though the site looked almost empty (from what I could tell there was a large party coming in later that evening) however that was then and we were there now so to speak. The food this time around as not as good and was not a patch on our last visit when we return to the area we will in all honesty try somewhere else. **

A welcoming pub and restaurant in the heart of Clearwell, set in a lovely location. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and a dog-friendly bar area. Parking is available for around 10 cars. The pub is clean, well-maintained, and has a great atmosphere. Friendly staff. We had the sirloin and rump steaks, both perfectly cooked and served with generous sides – absolutely delicious. Couldn’t resist staying for dessert: the pecan brownie and trio of chocolate ice cream was a highlight. You have to try the chocolate ice cream 😋 Definitely a place worth visiting if you’re in the area. We’ll be back soon to try the Sunday roast!
