It is with a heavy heart that I feel like I have no choice but to rate this pub two stars.
I originally went to this pub two years ago while camping in Coleford and it was a hidden gem. Food was amazing, great company and felt very welcome.
Last week my friends and I walked from our campsite to the pub, looking forward to the same experience. Unfortunately, presumably the new landlord or different member of staff was behind the bar and made us feel anything but welcome. It was almost like a scene in a horror movie where you see the protaganist walk into a local bar, and everyone is staring and making you feel uneasy.
I can only hope that this was nervousness due to the current Covid situation, however the 5 of us walked in wearing masks and being respectful to all Covid rules. This cant be said for the majority of the locals in the pub, who possibly felt above the rules as it was their local.
The drinks that we bought we believe we were overcharged for also, as the price for one round was greater than double the price we paid at another local pub up the road. I cant comment on the food this time around, as we did not feel welcome enough to stay and eat there.
The atmosphere was so unpleasant that we just moved on from the pub directly through the garden, where we were sitting and walked to the next pub where the locals were extremely welcoming including the bar staff.
TLDR - would not recommend for non locals whilst Covid is ongoing. Well worth a try when things...
Read moreCosy family pub, with old British comedy shows on Tele from like 1950s on, so calming and funny. Pool table games room on one side. Pub seating & bar in the middle and dining area on another side, carpeted floor, homely, not that laminate business.
The food quality was top notch! Everything was fresh, hot and lovely hearty portion size too, not skimped, including pretty salad on the side with lemon, cucumber, watercress, lettuce gem hearts leaves etc. Service with a smile to despite waitress had to go in like 4 times to ask chef 4 different questions, we were all giggling by the 4th question lol.
Whenever we're back in Monmouthshire we'll pop back in and introduce others passing through. Oh yeah the garden was clean and nice outdoor benches and there's a pretty little well in the rear car park.
We had another event planned ahead for the evening after our Forest of Dean walk, but 4 of us just sat there in the corner opposite table 9, comfy and bantering away, suddenly realising we still had over an hour's drive head of us hehehe!...
Read moreWent today and booked for 12.30 the waitresses did not take our order so we ended going up to the bar to order than didn't come till 1.30 and the waitresses did not apologise for the wait. The high chair given to us was filthy and we had to clean it ourselves. When we ordered drinks they were out of date when we confronted them they tried to say they were in date got another out and it was 3 months out of date. Then a waitresses dropped cutlery over my 3 year old son including a knife and didn't even apologise in the end we skipped dessert as we already been there 2 hours. When we confronted the manager he did not care and gave us a bad attitude. The roast was nice but very small I will not be going again very...
