You'lll see below my review from 3 years ago when this place was amazing; I have visited many times since and the standard had been maintained - I am sorry to say that is no longer the case.....

We have visited 4 times in the last few months so we are clearly fans of the place

In October 2021 the food was OK - the menu had been thinned down and offered less choice - but the service was nowhere near the standard we had come to expect. Waiting three quarteers of an hour for 3 main dishes when we were the first to arrive that evening isn't good

In November 2021 we enjoyed the Sunday roast although the beef was disappointing considering how good the steaks are here

In December 2021 the meal was good - as tasty as ever but the decisionn to thin the menu down still further (and rremove the option of the best mussels in the area) made choosing harder. The Scallops starter was very expensive for 3 scallops and a little sauce

And now in January of the new year we returned with family membbers who really enjoyed their meal there with us inn September and, sadly, there was more disappointment

Service again wasn't the fastest although this time they were busier and so I accept that

The chips at the Polgooth are legendary - not on this visit, they were simply not the same. As previouslly mentioned the reduced menu limts choice - especially when there are items unavailable - but our party opted for one Burnt Ends (which was good barring the chips); one Rump Steak (very nice steak as ever but a little pricey these days) and two burgers

The burgers used to be special - happy to pay £14.50 for a really good burger - not any more. What came out was a small burger bun, a burger that was incredibly thin and dry, a slice of bacon and one of tomato so thin they couldn't be tasted. There was no side salad at all and the green content in the burger was one slice of gherkin and a bit of lettuce

Sad to say the meal wasn't really that good overall, vvery disappointed

Original review Very tasty and we'll priced for the quality of food very promptly served by helpful friendly staff

This was my first visit here and it lived up to it's reputation.

The soup was superb, really thick and tasty; the crispy squid perfect and my mussels amongst the best l have ever tasted - one tip if you are having the mussels - they have a delicious quantity of garlic in the sauce so be prepared for slightly smelly breath the next morning

The main courses were of an equally high standard. The "small" fish and chips were excellent and very plentiful and more than enough; the fish pie declared as the best ever and my own beef and horseradish sausages and mash full of wonderful flavour

We will most certainly return as soon as possible

Highly recommended but l suggest you book if you want to be sure of a place - on a wet Friday in late October it was full as we were...

It breaks my heart to do this review. We come to par every year and have family here. We always have at least one visit to polgooth inn. It's been amazing but last night we had a bad experience. Starting with the fact we had a wait for our table but we don't mind that. Once at the table we were not asked once if we wanted drinks. One person went to the bar to get drinks. Another person asked for sauces and the reply from the staff members was a very sharp 'what sauces' and honestly it was rude. Like she had been put out. My partner we as so incensed he went out to say something but she was busy. Anyway we did complain on the night and that was begrudgingly resolved. The manager and one other member couldn't have been nicer. Asked if the food was ok, my mum in law said her potatoes were burnt, the girl simply as said do you want fresh ones. The burger was dry as was the fish cake. Other people said their food was ok. Your food is not usually only ok. It has always been great. We even had to ask for water. When I got my dessert my dinner plate was under my nose still. As I said, I hate to do this but this was for an birthday and all he got to drink at the...

Me and my partner came here last night for the Valentines menu and I can honestly only describe the experience as a total let down. The steak platter, while nice in flavour, lack contents. For £45 we got 6 roast potatoes, 6 onion rings, 3 mushrooms, 2 tomatoes and some watercress on top of a lacking total of steak. For £45 I’d expect much more generous servings of veg and salad at least. The steak did not seem like 20oz even after considering the loss of mass after cooking. The bernaise sauce was too heavily flavoured with tarragon and the jus had burnt lumps through it. The steak only came in medium rare which did nicely but we are definitely more blue/rare kind of people so the choice would have been appreciated. We followed with the profiteroles and expected a lot more again for the price. We ended up with three profiteroles each which were lazily dumped with chocolate sauce and pistachio crumb which seemed carelessly dumped on the plate. The flavours were nice but we were hoping for a couple more elements and more care for the asking price. Overall we wish we had spent half the price of the bill and gotten a Chinese...

Had a quick burger here. The patty was decent , couple of thin smash burgers. Plain burger sauce and gerkin on top. Bacon was meh, kinda transparent. But over all it would have been ok….if light on the effort front. BUT if you can’t pick it up to eat it, is it even a burger hey?!. brioche bun was toasted so fingers went through it when trying to pick it up. Has the chef tried it I wondered. Next time I guess try steaming that bun. Oh yeah and the coleslaw was measly portion but that was OK cause it was terrible. So room for improvement for £18! Young staff absent when trying get served. Loads on, just all avoiding doing any work 😂 Edit…. Love the response. Maybe they aren’t the pub for me…opposed to sorry we realise we could do better ! Incidentally word is they don’t allow their staff a meal if working long shifts (as they promise to staff). Just ‘chips’ so no wonder staff aren’t motivated if that’s how the owners treat young workers. Agreed you arent the pub for me.

We had booked earlier for a birthday which the waiting staff knew, also a banner had been placed at our table. We were in a dog friendly area, so it lacked the ambience of the main area, I know this as we were led through this area with dogs, to the disapproval of at least one diner. On a positive note, they have a dog menu, and the bottom snoffing beer for dogs sounds worth a try! Unfortunately, after this, things did not go so well. One meal was returned as it did not contain fish, only potato, and the replacement did not arrive until after others had finished eating. A pizza contained large (1") cubes of dry lamb, which could not be eaten. Service was slow, with more than one drink order taking 15 minutes or longer (one beer ordered during the main course arrived during the desert). Though we were not charged for the fish meal, it was not the best overall experience, unfortunately. However, we made the best of it but are unlikely to return.

The Polgooth Inn is an absolute delight from start to finish! Nestled in a beautiful, scenic spot, it offers the perfect blend of cozy countryside charm and warm hospitality. The atmosphere is welcoming, with a lovely mix of traditional pub character and a relaxed, friendly vibe. The food is exceptional – fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. From hearty classics to creative specials, every dish feels thoughtfully crafted and generously portioned. The drinks selection is also impressive, with local ales and wines that perfectly complement the menu. What truly makes the Polgooth Inn shine is the staff. Attentive, genuine, and always ready with a smile, they make you feel like a valued guest every time. Whether you’re popping in for a quiet drink, enjoying a special dinner, or celebrating with friends and family, it’s the kind of place that leaves you looking forward to your next visit. Highly recommended – a true Cornish treasure!
