Awesome. Don't come here expecting a noisy sports bar. The Bell is a wonderful time capsule reminding us what village pubs used to be like in a bygone era. Come here for the best beer in the area. Come here for fresh hot crusty rolls featuring and showcasing proper food. Thick sliced ham, beautiful crystally mature cheddar, fresh sweet crab. They also do Ploughman's which are epic, and a small selection of homemade hot sponge type puds. The toilets allow you to gaze at the stars whilst you take your ease. The pub decor is a goldmine of old cuttings and local history. No TVs or Jukebox here, but a nice selection of books by the front door to pass your time, which will actually slow down if you allow it to when you visit. Bring cash. You order through one of three serving hatches that are the bar, proper old school. I say bring cash as they don't even have a till, just an original wooden drawer for notes and a carved bowl for change. Talking of change, please don't Bell... Ever. The pub is an absolute gem in this day and age of brewery owned chain pubs. Loved by camra members, locals, cyclists, clubs and those in the know, I'm in two minds whether or not to post this review, just because I don't want it to become...
Read moreA wonderfully quaint old pub with a good selection of ales, ciders and other drinks. The tiny wooden interior reminds me more of an old railway signal box than a pub, but at the moment you won't be able to see the wonderful interior as the pub is now fully set up for outdoor operation. A queuing system leads you to a desk outside the front door where you can order drinks which are brought out to you surprisingly quickly. There is a one-way system into the garden where there are plenty of tables. Some are in marquees and some are in the open. The gents is outside, as it always has been and temporary outdoor women's toilets have been set up. There are hand sanitiser stations all around the pub exterior. It's an...
Read moreThe Bell is to be treasured as a standout example an old fashioned English country pub in the finest sense. It should have protected status!! The landlord had time for us on a hot sunny Saturday, genuinely hospitable and patient with my indecision over the beer and happy to let me try several in the process. The team preparing the straightforward menu of lunchtime rolls were all delightful. Enjoyed the ox tongue and also the prawn rolls. Veggie options available. Come on a sunny day when you can enjoy the quaint country garden and step back in time to an England...
