We were excited to visit the dog retreat, particularly with reference of the name. The decor inside was well maintained and the dog treats/gifts to purchase were a nice touch. We opted to sit outside as the view of the lake was incredibly but found that it didn’t seem outside had been touched for however long. Majority of the chairs and tables were covered with cobwebs and one of the benches appeared a little bit unstable to sit on. We have been to many places that have a dog menu and by the looks of the menu and terminology provided, this was similar in fresh based products that is a real meal for the dog. However we were disappointed to find out this was just treats from the gift part. It does feel that this “dog menu” needs to be reviewed and perhaps clearly stated this is not an actual meal, but instead treats. When my partner went to get our dog a bowl of water, there was confusion on the waitress part of whether this was for us or the dog. Whilst the carafe bottle was a nice touch, half the bottles were empty and the bowls small. We waited quite a while for our food and drink (despite there being four members of staff who did not look to having roles to do) which we both ordered the bacon and sausage roll. At first we thought the sausage was a little undercooked and then wondered if it was chicken sausage (this wasn’t made clear). It felt quite expensive for what we had ordered and wasn’t particularly tasty. We were interested in the field hire however this also seemed to be a bit run down. Whilst this place promises dog friendly, it was not the most dog friendly place we have been and it felt that the staff were not that bothered with dogs. We left quite quickly due to it not feeling very ambient or welcoming. It is on private land but it felt at times that we were trespassing and what could have been a nice way to meet other dog owners, felt uncomfortable. Unfortunately we probably won’t be returning.

Review for The Dog Retreat ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Dog Retreat is an absolute hidden gem by a beautiful lake, perfect for both pups and their owners. This cozy spot has such a welcoming atmosphere, and it's clear they’ve put a lot of thought into creating a dog-friendly haven. The highlight? Their dedicated menu for dogs—my furry friend was over the moon with the delicious treats. It’s a fantastic place to unwind, enjoy some quality time with your pup, and grab a coffee while taking in the scenic lake views. Definitely worth the visit for any dog lover looking for a unique experience!

Such a lovely visit to the Dog Retreat - it’s clear dogs are very much loved here. Treats and water are freely available as well as an amazing menu for them too! Pip enjoyed her Puppycino! The menu for humans was also excellent - the Victoria sponge was delicious! There were also lots of lovely dog themed gifts to buy as well as lots of delicious treats. All with a beautiful view (and outside seating area) over the late. Day boarding also available - I will definite be using this and I’ll definitely be back at the cafe! 🐶🦴❤️

Genuinely super disappointed with having to write this review. First time we came here, just for a coffee was lovely, sat outside with our dog and had a nice time. Second time was absolutely shocking. We sat inside as it was very windy and the place had zero atmosphere. No background music, staff just chatting behind the counter and basically had to whisper due to sitting in complete silence. We ordered 4 coffees and 4 bacon and sausage rolls, coffees came out in about 10 minutes, fine with that. First 2 rolls came out after about 30 minutes, a bit longer than expected but that's fine. We then finished our coffees and the other 2 rolls still hadn't arrived. 45 minutes later, still nothing. Asked the staff who said they would check, and never let us know. Waiting another 10 minutes and asked for a refund for the 2 remaining rolls as we had to leave. This place could be a lovely little retreat if it just had some better management to maintain service.

Unfortunately I won't be returning as there are a lot better...

Such a shame, I was ready to love this place now it’s had time to get properly established, but unfortunately this morning’s visit was a real let down. We weren’t greeted at all and the young lady who took our order was clearly not keen on having to deal with customers. I watched her play with her, admittedly very pretty, loose waist length hair while standing over the unprotected pastries for roughly half an hour while we were there which was rather off-putting. My husband’s lunch took a long time to arrive and was, frankly, not worth the wait. His fries were dry and burned at the ends and his salad consisted of a mound of iceberg with one tiny tomato and a (singular) half slice of cucumber. I’d long polished off my very peculiar lukewarm bacon and cheese turnover, luckily the dog quite liked it. Lovely venue and the cakes looked fabulous, but couldn’t be bothered to stay due to the complete disinterest of the staff and their lack of basic food hygiene or...
