Really disappointed with our stay again and doubt we would come again. I don't usually like to leave poor reviews, normally prefer to give direct feedback however, the feedback I left during our last visit obviously fell on deaf ears and as there was no one available at the reception desk to discuss our findings with this time around I feel a public review is fitting.
Really not good value for money. Fantastic location with easy access to the beach however, extortionate prices for a stay in a caravan that is showing signs of its age. We have stayed multiple times over the years at the Oxwich Bay static vans but the price has gone up and up and as far as I can see, no money has been reinvested in this side of the business. Their main focus appears to be as a wedding venue.
Cigarette butts scattered around outside the front door to the caravan, not very welcoming and I feel should have been part of the change over cleaning/servicing of the van.
Bed... NOT a king size as advertised, double at best and so uncomfortable that I felt I was rolling out of bed all night. We nearly came home after our first night as I didnt sleep a wink. Stained duvet cover, really unappealing! We were woken by very noisy bin lorries at 5.30am and a boy racer driving like a lunatic the night before, skidding around the car park.
Breakfast was very poor, one of the poorest hotel breakfasts I have had and no option to opt out of breakfast when booking our accommodation (breakfast had been poor on two previous stays too). Luke warm and weak coffee, cheap unappealing pastries and box's of rice crispies and the like. Cooked items served buffet style were nothing to write home about either. We decided not to even bother with the breakfast on our second morning despite having paid for it. Instead choosing to travel into Mumbles for a decent meal.
We had planned to eat at the Bistro during our stay but as the cheapest dish on the menu was fish and chips at £22 each and the standard of food on offer at breakfast so poor, we opted to eat at the ice cream/fish and chip hut down the road!
All this and not even a manned reception desk to deal with any concerns we may have had.
I do appreciate the hospitality sector has been hard hit in recent years and like so many business's, struggling with staff recruitment. It is to this end we made excuses for this hotel during our last couple of stays since the pandemic. However, at the prices this hotel is charging, I really do expect better service, cleanliness and standard of food, not to mention a comfortable bed for the night!
Sadly, it would take a lot for me to return and spend my hard earned cash (which they no longer accept anyway) at what historically has always been a favourite hotel with my family.
I cannot help but feel that unless you are interested in getting married, The Oxwich Bay Hotel is really not very...
Read moreBooked the bridal suite for a night away with my wife. It was available for only £10 more than the other rooms and offered a spectacular view of the bay with bi-folding doors, so I thought why not👍 Check in was straight forward and the staff behind the bar were polite and helpful. On entering our room the first thing we noticed was the temperature, it was freezing in there. We quickly familiarised ourselves with the room and its facilities, there's no air-conditioning unit and the temperature is controlled by 2 radiators. Both had the thermostats wide open, but we're stone cold🙁 We decided to head off across the beach and if the heating was not on when we returned I would mention it. We know the Gower well, it's a beautiful area if you love your beaches and long walks❤️ We walked from the hotel along the beach almost as far as 3 cliffs about a 5 mile round trip. We returned to the hotel and had a drink in the bar and sat by an open fire. In general the decor and surroundings are beautiful. We headed back to our room, the heating was on but it still wasn't a comfortable temperature in the room. But as it was still only around 5pm I didn't think it would be an issue by the time we went to bed. We had a meal in the restaurant, great staff again. Good menu and the food was lovely and reasonably priced. Headed to bed around 10.30. The room was still not a great temperature but there was a lovely warm duvet and after getting into bed it didn't really matter. The hotel was lovely and quiet and we slept well. Using the rooms facilities the following morning we noticed a few things. The hairdryer was in extremely bad shape. Even though there was a pat test sticker less than a month old on it all the housing was melted. The room itself needs a little tlc too. Some of the grouting in the bathroom was pretty mouldy, the mirror cabinet above the sink was loose, which I found out when switching the mirror light on. The toilet flush was missing half a button although it still functioned. The were also various marks on walls, rips in the wall paper, dirty windows, mouldy sealants. Seeing as this is supposed to be their "bridal suite" I was a little underwhelmed by it. The bi-folding doors and view from the room are spectacular and about it's only plus point. Breakfast was buffet style, there was a decent selection of cereals, etc. The full English was warm, but not hot. There wasn't a great selection left by the time we headed down 9.30am (they serve till 10), even though it was quiet in the restaurant. We were happy enough even if it meant substituting one type of egg for another etc. But it would of been better a little warmer. Overall it was a decent experience, but it could of been better. Oxwich is a beautiful area and holds a special place in my heart. But I don't think we'll be in any rush to return to the...
Read moreThanks for the response Stuart. I've uploaded some photos from the bar to the toilet. It's quite clearly filthy. There's cracked tiles, tiles with holes in them. The fridge area obviously needs some attention as underneath it's dirty. The toilets were ok, but not great. The entrance to the bathroom area also needs sorting.
In respect of the food, it was quite easy to see what other people were eating... it didn't look great, seemed overpriced and very very similar to last year. I wasn't going to take the risk again... we went to the fish and chip shop instead.
I see that other people have posted similar reviews...
Just by way of an update. Just been back into the hotel for a quick drink, before walking on the sands.
We'd seen the better reviews the hotel has received and hoped that things had improved. Unfortunately it would seem this isn't the case. Although it's good to see the hygiene rating has increased, the place looks filthy and needs a thorough clean. The carpet still needs replacing, the food still looks underwhelming and overpriced. We had booked in for dinner, but quickly cancelled.
The hotel could be soooooo much more. I do wonder about some of the reviews as they are so far wide of the mark....
It's a wonderful spot that the hotel is in. Completely fabulous, the views are amazing and the sands are heavenly.
Unfortunately the hotel is not up to standard. Briefly, the room we had was dirty, radiator not secured on wall, door handle hanging off, cups where tiny, no hooks to hang wet towels, sink wouldn't drain, bath had sand in it. Only a double bed which wasn't comfortable. Mattress stained.
Food was awful. We had one meal and then needed to use the local shop instead. Breakfast was terrible with lots of guests talking about the poor quality of ingredients. The scrambled egg was inedible and looking at plates it was left by everyone. Sausages we will not talk about. We settled for toast and jam instead. Food hygiene level of 2 out of 5 perhaps says enough.
It's such a shame because it could be fantastic place to stay. We did mention all of this to management at the hotel, but it seemed to fall on deaf ears.
It seems that there's a lack of interest or perhaps will to make the stay what...
