We stopped here for lunch while on a Hike in the area. We were a big group (approx 20) and they were amongst the few pubs happy to have us. As it was a nice sunny day we sat outside, and as per the pictures, it's a pleasing sight, with the pond, the bridge and loads of character. The pub on the inside too is full of character. Staff are a happy bunch too. Food was served with no issues and came out really quickly, which was perfect as we were all starving. Finally, coming to the food - this is where I'd mark them down. It's not the greatest food and is simply quite un-loved! Mine was fish with some steamed veggies, which were quite overdone, and not much in terms of flavour. Others who had veggie burgers were also underwhelmed with their dishes. So if anything, would be nice to have food that also leaves a smile on the customers face. It is value for money, but I'd rather pay for nice food.

Too long since two of us were here last, and a first time visit for another of us. Impromptu visit for a mid afternoon drink. It's probably auto-suggestion, but all that water in the delightful and expansive gardens seemed to take the edge of the scorching heat, and the shady cool both under the parasols and inside in the historic, low-ceilinged pub was also a bit of light-relief. There's a plethora of gloriously quirky objets-trouvés and ephemera both indoors and out. Duck-friendly, dog-friendly, kid-friendly, incomer-friendly, quintessentislly English pub. And the newest member of the team (3rd week only) employed her barista skills and kindly agreed to go 'off-piste' and do me a lush mocha, despite her colleague's light-hearted concerns that it's all getting a little bit 'London' if not 'Americanised'! 🤣😅 Hope to visit again soon. Unique place.

A brilliant pub full of character and charm. I had a pint of Hawkstone Lager, which was spot on. The garden’s a real highlight too, with a huge pond complete with a little bridge and koi carp swimming around. There’s loads to look at, including old bits of machinery and even a few classic motorbikes dotted about, which really adds to the atmosphere. A great mix of history, warmth, and personality, well worth a visit if you’re in Amersham.

I really wish google would let me do 6 stars instead of 5.

Soon as we pulled up outside, two what i assume to be locals where out the front having their drink and with out missing a beat, turned to us and said hi guys and i like that, you don’t get that in any pub in wycombe.

We then walked in and you definitely get the proper quintessential British country pub vibe. All the little trinkets and things round the place really add to the vibe.

The drink selection was good and varied. I went for a pint of Stella. It was a very good pint of Stella too. You could really tell how clean the lines are because of how good it tasted.

We then sat in the garden for a little while. Like on the inside, there is so many cool things in the garden, from classic bikes, steam engines and olden time equestrian things. Theres a huge pond with some of the biggest fish i think i have ever seen in a pond. Even a really cool duck.

We headed inside and ordered 2 roast beef dinners. Where do i even start with how good the food was. Portion size spot on, meat cooked perfectly, veg cooked well and the roast potatoes, i cant even tell you how good those where. To top it off, its great value for money. The chocolate cake i had for desert tasted fresh, presented well and didn’t feel dry like most pub cakes are.

The staff where very helpful and all ways greeted with a smile every time you go to the bar. The locals seem very friendly too, even learned about shire horses. The whole experience made me want to leave high wycombe and move to the village.

I only have two bad points to which i cant really say they are bad points. I wanted guinness but it wasn’t on. My guess is that its popular in there and just ran out of barrels. (These things happen) wasn’t that much of an issue like i say as they have a good range of lagers.

The second point that my Stella wasn’t in a Stella glass, it was in a camden hells glass but thats a better beer either way and the hells glasses look nicer too.

All in all: Venue: 10/10 Staff: 10/10 Food: 10/10 Star rating: if google would let me, 6 stars

I cant wait to...

Review of Christmas Dinner on Boxing Day 2018.

First time myself and my family have ever had Christmas Dinner outside the walls of the family home and to be totally honest it was an unforgettable experience.

As this is my new "local" we thought we'd give it a try. The Christmas menu consisted of Turkey, Shoulder of Lamb, Seabass, Pork Belly and a few more I can't recall.

The Shoulder of Lamb came with a parsnip, broccoli carrots, stuffing and a wonderful piece of lamb with a perfect balance of mint and rosemary. The portion size was perfect. Far more than I was expecting. With a table of 6 of us everyone had something different and it all looked amazing. The meat was tender and tasty and fell apart with the slightest movement. To top it off, the drinks (alcoholic ones) are absolutely amazing value. Compared to what I am used to in London it's wallet saving prices.

The food was an easy 5 star and I'd give it more if I could. The venue is small, traditional and classic. The staff are lovely, attentive and polite

Christmas Dinner or a normal weekend treat at the Red Lion is an absolute delight. Thank you Red Lion.

Awful B&B. Had arranged a 5 night stay and paid up front. Left after the first night. Staff attitude seemed they wanted to be elsewhere. It was obviously too much trouble asking for breakfast at 7.00am instead of 7.30 but they relented at second time of asking. Bedroom was right above the bar, so couldn't sleep. The main door slammed shut every time someone came and went and sent a shudder throughout the building. Then, after the last visitor left (1.20am), the staff shifted the furniture back to where it started. The bedroom door had a hole in it where a cylinder (Yale) lock had been removed and the hole left unfilled. Food was mediocre and overpriced, as was the selection of beers. After I'd found alternate accomodation, I returned to collect my luggage at 5.00pm only to find the place locked up and unlit with no key provided to gain access. After 10 minutes of banging the door, someone appeared. They even had the nerve to keep a cancellation fee concerning the remaining, unused nights. AVOID...
