A Bit of A Mixed Bag. We dined as 3 adults. The service was excellent - attentive serving staff who were helpful and friendly without being intrusive. The food was mixed - the lamb shank (publicised as a speciality of the chef) was frankly one of the worst dishes I have had in an Indian restaurant - the shank was small and tough (about 4-5 smallish mouthfuls) and definitely not marinated in the sauce which tasted like lamb gravy with curry powder in it (I know it probably wasn't) but it was really not a pleasant combination with a tough small lamb shank. Given it was a speciality, I was expecting soft buttery lamb, not something so chewy and tough. In contrast, the fish curry was excellent (delicate, perfectly cooked, with a subtle combination of flavours), the black dahl was also excellent - as good as some of the best that we've had in places like Mumbai and Singapore. The butter chicken was very average, but the naans (garlic and cheese) were again very good. When ordering the 3 mains we were disappointed that when we asked if we could have a half portion of the dahl as a side, the server came back and said 'no they didn't do half portions', which seemed unreasonable as we ordered 3 mains and the dahl isn't cooked to order, so we just ordered it as a main. Any restaurant worth its salt wouldn't give that type of response for something which could be easily accommodated (it isn't as if we even bothered to enquire about price).
For dessert, we had gulab jamon cheesecake which was a great tasting and innovative dish, if a little on the small side. The atmosphere was poor as there were a couple of weddings on, and instead of being in the restaurant, the dining had been moved into a (nice) room next to the bar (the bar was full of wedding guests) near the entrance hall. With no background music in the room, and the doors propped open so you got the clatter and noise from the bar, it was soulless and slightly unpleasant. Even just a little soft music would have improved the experience. Overall, the cost including one pint of beer, two soft drinks and service came to around £140 for the three of us. Given the cost, atmosphere and variable food quality unlikely to visit again despite being just a couple...
Read moreWhat's to say aside from totally perfect? We were very fortunate that it was a rare occasion for the restraunt to be open on a Sunday and it was quiet enough for us as hotel guests to relax, enjoy the setting and appreciate Vijay Bhavs' superb representation of traditional Indian/Pujab dishes. A varied yet select menu made choice difficult but once we had settled on our choices our host was thrilled to explain each dish and its origins. I deeply apologise for forgetting the gentleman's name who looked after us but he went WAY beyond his obligations in order to please us. He even zipped out back to create a one off Mocktail for our Daughter.
There are lots and lots of positive reviews from locals who rave about the quality of the cooking here and it is no wonder why. The chef is inventive but also adheres to the authentic tastes of his region. Warbrook House is a beautiful setting and I sincerely hope that they are able to retain the passion and skill of Executive...
Read moreWe booked a table for four here a month ago to celebrate a birthday and when we arrived last night (8th March) we found the restaurant was closed for refurbishment. I had no notification of this so ended up looking stupid as I was the person who arranged this meal. We were very disappointed that they did not have the decency to tell us our booking would not be honoured.
As somebody who lives very close to Clove Canal View my wife an I were planning to eat here regularly as when we tried it last October the food was excellent. Next time I fancy quality Indian dining I will go to Zenuk a couple of miles farther away but also excellent...
