Wonderful gem just 5 mins from the M1! This was perhaps the best meal I had during my weeklong visit to England. It's always fun to try different cuisines and being in England, pubs are where its at. However, not all pubs are created equal, and you'll quickly find that some are better than others.
Lancaster Arms is the quintessential English pub with the perfect blend of excellent food (and drink!) paired with a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. The outdoor seating area is spacious and welcoming, with a separate area for smokers to do their thing without disturbing your meal. The menu offers a variety of delicious options but on my visit, I went for the Shorthorn Stack. It's clear Lancaster Arms take great pride in their selection of meats, which all come from the same place in Ireland. It was delicious, and the combination of food an atmosphere provided me the genuine English dining experience that I was looking for!
I would be doing a disservice if I didn't mention how wonderful the staff is! The woman that greeted me as I arrived rather late this evening has worked there for 19 years, and also makes the Rollo dessert you see in the picture. She was my waitress throughout and very kindly walked me through the menu options. This on a night where staff of other restaurants were usually eager to hit the road. She was the "face" of the restaurant, and you couldn't have asked for a better ambassador! She helped make my dining experience what it was. Later, I was able to meet one of the chef's and the owner of the pub; a very enjoyable experience! It's clear they take a lot of pride in their work! Being a late evening, I invited the owner to join me for a few pints, and was delighted that he did! We chatted for a few hours, sharing stories and ideas, and showing me the evolution of the pub throughout the years. It was a truly unique experience!
Of all my dining experiences, this was my favorite! The only thing I would recommend is for more visibility on internet dining searches. I didn't find them until I really searched in a specific area, and they should have more visibility on internet searches. ...
Read moreWe regularly come to the Lancaster arms for a Sunday roast but today I was really upset with the treatment we received. We had our 4 month old baby with us and we were round the back of the restaurant in a corner with no other diners present as there are only 2 small tables next to the bar. I settled my baby after a feed and put on white noise to ensure he stayed settled hoping we and the rest of the restaurant would enjoy our meals without an unsettled infant. I was asked to move the pushchair next to the table that was empty as the reservation was no longer coming and our baby would no longer be behind us in his pushchair (I did tell them we had a pushchair on the booking so they’d ensure we had room for him) the waitress then came back and asked me to turn off the white noise as diners were starting to complain, I struggled to imagine who could’ve complained as we were the only ones at the two tables! There were no other diners in our area and the low wave noise coming from my phone was no where near as loud as the coffee machine behind the bar but surely you expect a pub at Sunday lunchtime to have many noises going on?! As a new mum this was upsetting and quite embarrassing. Personally I would like to think everyone would agree a low wave noise is much more pleasant than a screaming baby? I did as I was asked but what really upset me was when we left and walked through the main restaurant area there was a toddler watching peppa pig on an iPad for all to hear! I’m saddened as we are local to the area and have always had a pleasant experience. Maybe you should advise people on “the rules” when they advise you there is a baby coming or maybe don’t offer childrens menus as they clearly...

Just a warning to others - the Landlord of the Lancaster Arms is running a screening system under the guise of health measures to select his type of person...I rang on Saturday to request a time slot to take my girlfriend out for a change on Sunday. I was asked whether I was a regular and where I am from - unlike the Landlord I have lived in Desford for 17 years as have my family. When I said I had only been in half a dozen times in the last year or so I was told that we weren’t welcome as we had not supported them over the last 18 months. I was initially shocked at this attitude - I work hard , and don’t get the opportunity to go into pubs and restaurants every day - I assume to be allowed at the Lancaster Arms you need to be an alcoholic or selected by some other criteria. Anyway I will never venture into the place again and encourage my friends, family and anyone else to leave the Lancaster Arms to its exclusive clientele, find somewhere where people from Desford are in fact welcome - l suggest he might have a shock coming when the novelty of pubs re-opening is over he’ll be back to being empty as it was pre March!! On a positive - thank you to The Bluebell Inn who didn’t quiz me when I called them yesterday and have indeed welcomed us both in for Sunday...
