This pub is not going to be to everyone's taste. If you like soulless modern gastropubs, stripped of any sense of tradition or charm, and instead turned into a faddish modern eatery, then the King of Belgians is probably not for you.
If, on the other hand, you actually want a pub to have atmosphere, character, a sense of history, and to be able to visit a place which is a genuine hub of the local community, then you're in for a treat.
I won't bore you with my commentary on the interior - which I loved - you should go and read the entry in CAMRA's Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors for an authoritative account. Instead it is worth mentioning that this delightful pub is on a fairly small scale, and you'll likely be sitting cheek by jowl with the locals, who, on our visit, couldn't have been lovelier and more welcoming. Just like the owners - the landlady and landlord were incredibly hospitable, and went out of their way to find us a table (I suspect a couple of regulars actually moved to accommodate us) - which, being out-of-towners with a young child in tow was very much appreciated.
I enjoyed the unpretentious well cooked food - it felt like eating a friend's house who happened to be a talented cook - and they had an interesting selection of really well kept ales, as well as a local cider (Cromwell Cider) - an unexpected treat to find cider in this part of the country.
It's the sort of pub where all the locals know each other, and at the bar everyone was talking to everyone else. As a visitor it was a joy to behold, this is exactly what pubs...
Read moreWhat a fantastic little olde-worlde pub! Five of us rocked-up for a cheeky Saturday lunch and I have to say, one of the best pizzas I've had in ages (The Diablo or Dracula or something hot sounding) We had a selection of starters: Garlic mushrooms (yum), Halloumi (obvious yum) and the Calamari, which matched in quality the Calamari I had at one of Ramsey's restaurants once. The missus went for the omelet that arrived like an 'inflated' version of what you would normally expect (as it looked 'puffed-up') and was apparently fabulous. All of these a were home-made. Our friend had the veggie burger, which she loved and the little fellah had a little pizza which evaporated off the plate after he pinched most of the Calamari starters. The service was impeccable and the drink selection was great. There's even plenty of non-alcoholic ales (as I was driving). Five stars from me. We'll be back without a doubt. Cannot wait to try their roasts!!! Why this place wasn't packed-out is beyond me. Great food, great service and...
Read moreLovely little pub with a fantastic menu.
I have visited twice now and have thoroughly enjoyed the food on both visits.
Good portion sizes, well presented and very tasty.
The only complaint I have is that they charge £9.99 for a child's dinner which I think is rather pricey for an 18 month old.
The pictures I have posted show the Garlic prawns starter (so good I forgot to take the picture first!), the soup of the day, the sausage and mash, chicken with wedges and then the child's roast dinner.
All of which were very nice indeed.
All of this plus 2x coke cost £50. Perhaps a little expensive but I would...
