I visited the Boshaw Trout a few months ago with my wife and daughter, after longing to eat and drink there purely based on the beautiful location and positive reviews I had read online. Unfortunately my expectations were sadly not met. Upon arrival we were seated relatively quick, although not in an ideal area were we could take in the view, but our table felt comfortable nontheless. We proceeded to order drinks which are very lacking in variety, my wife attempted to order a WKD, but was told they did not sell them, so instead asked for Disaronno with Coke... also they did not have this. A bar without these basic drinks is not much of a bar, but the staff did offer similar alternatives, albeit it more expensive options, so she settled for just a Coke. I myself had the same. We then looked over the menu, and although we felt was quite small and again lacking in variety we placed our order, and asked if our daughter's meal could be brought out first, as she is a toddler and can be impatient when having to wait. Spoiler, she had to wait as her food did not arrive until after our starters had been finished with, despite asking numerous times were it was. My starter was fine in terms of taste and presentation but not worth the price for the portion size (kebab skewer), but my wife's was simply inedible and was left only after 2-3 mouthfuls. It was bland and overcooked, and for some reason the chef had opted to incorporate the beetroot into the rissoto rather than as a side accompaniment, which was our understanding, and I believe she ended up eating only the goat's cheese sprinkled on top. We hoped that our mains would be a much needed improvement but alas more disappointment ensued, both of us had ordered the venison. The portion size was ridiculously small and massively overpriced, the meat way undercooked, cold and tasteless. The potatoes overcooked, and the sauce drizzle was way too sweet and left a horrible lingering taste in the mouth. I'm giving this a 2 star review overall, 1 for the location and the other for friendly staff, but I can't award it any more. This was unfortunately a very disappointing time and we have not visited again, and have no plans on ever returning. Much better food and views elsewhere, not worth the money or the time it took to drive here.

After a stunning drive through the West Yorkshire dales and Holme valley we came to The Boshaw Trout. After parking up in the amply spaced car park we unloaded and entered the building. We were greeted to this very busy, bustling bar/ restaurant. Without a delay or a missed beat we were warmly greeted and our suitcases taken. We were escorted to our room. To say ‘wow’ would be an understatement. The attention to detail and professionalism to how the room was prepared and arranged was second to none. Thought this was going to be the usual tea, coffee and TV hotel room but what a surprise. A beautifully, beamed room with a freshly dressed double bed. Assorted teas, biscuits, SMART TV, free WiFi, fresh towels and hand soap cakes added to our comfort. A modern classic fitted W/C, shower en-suite complimented the room. The isolation, peacefulness and comfort of the Boshaw Trout made this the most perfect, relaxing and restful night. Depending on what time you arrive Brunch and evening meals are available. Breakfast is freshly prepared with your choice from their cooked menu. A lighter start is available from a good variety of cereals. A pot of tea or filtered coffee adds to kickstarting your day. Last, but not least! the owners and staff. They were absolutely amazing. The whole place appears to run effortlessly. Everyone was friendly, they explained and answered any queries promptly and efficiently. Wish we had booked for more than just the one night. Will definitely be organising a return visit to stay longer and explore. Dog friendly pub and cash/cards accepted. Early online booking advised so as not to miss out.

Great place for a night or two stopover, very well appointed and so clean in a quiet spot on moorlands. Terrific views on all sides and good walking country. My only criticism would be that the owners could have spent more on soundproofing ( not so easy in a property this old I know but they have clearly spent a lot of money already) as you can here someone sneeze 3 rooms away so if you are a light sleeper take some earplugs. The bar and restaurant are superb and service was very fast from a very friendly and attentive team of staff that someone has spent time and thought putting together. The menu caters for all tastes and good choice of vegi, vegan or gf options. An all round well done from us on this one and would certainly book again next trip to the area.

We were a Party of 12 on a Friday night all of us pre-ordered. Starters went off without a hitch and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Now the mains is when things started to go down hill a bit. Fish and chips - triple cooked chips were raw inside, mushy peas were cold and although you got the choice of garden or mushy on the menu, it wasn’t given on the night. After one person sent the chips back as waited for new ones - they were still raw. Sea bass- the menu states it comes with potatoes and green beans. One had a potato and 4 green beans, the other had no potatoes and 3 green beans. The chicken Roulade - cold and the accompanying potatoes were cold as well we had to request it to be reheated. The venison- meat was cooked perfectly ( and rested well) however the sauce was described as black cherry and rowan jelly. It was extremely sweet and had raspberries in, also tender stem broccoli was sparse and no hit of port. The liver was forgotten about although we definitely didn’t miss it off the order, as she read it back to us over the phone. The other items ordered were good Barnsley chop was good value for money and the lamb flatbread was also a well prepared dish.

The service wasn’t great either it took 20 minutes to get a drink, the bar staff were slow and forgot what you ordered. When clearing the table we asked if the sea bass should have come with potatoes and the server didn’t know.

Lastly pudding only 2 sticky toffee puddings were ordered and again we asked the server what they came with and again they didn’t know (maybe) custard. I requested poring cream if the was the case and I was told they would ask the kitchen. It came out with ice cream. I mentioned I asked for cream it got taken away and came back with the cream.

Over all over price, slow service and the food wasn’t that great - don’t think we will...
