From the outside it’s the archetypal country pub nestled in the bosom of Hepworth village on the outskirts of Holmfirth. Inside its exactly want you’d want - dimly lit, a warming fire, and traditional locally themed decor. There didn’t look to be too much room for a quite pint but it was a Sunday Lunchtime. The menu had plenty of options but being Sunday we went for beef and Yorkshire pudding which came with carrots, broccoli and roast potatoes. Topped this up with a side order of cauliflower cheese which though nice lacked the cheesiness you’d want. The beef was ultimately the star of the show as you’d hope - pink, juicy, with lashings of wholesome gravy. The price came in at around £20 PP which isn’t cheap but this is quality food, well prepared and the service was excellent. When The Great Plague struck England in 1665 Hepworth was the most northerly point that it reached. To save the village residents split it into two parts with those infected left isolated from the world in one half. Let’s hope the pub was on the side of the well and able because, as travel writer John Hillaby once said : “Few things are more pleasant than a village graced with a good church, a good priest and a good pub.” I can’t comment on the church, didn’t see the priest, but this is for sure a good pub.

It's a reasonably atmospheric old pub with a decent range of drinks. The food usually falls short of what we'd expect for the price and the billing of a top gastropub. An alleged steak and kidney pie was a pot of casserole with the least puffy puff pastry lid I've ever encountered. A pie it was not. Superficially tasty with a strong hit of beef and kidney but no real depth of flavour. 'buttery' mash did not taste of butter. A tiny portion of green beans completed the dish. Very disappointing. A chicken, mushroom and leek pie was just a creamy mush with the same poor pastry and accompaniments as above.

Had dinner here at around 6pm on a rainy Thursday in September. Did not book and was seated straight away in the dog friendly area as we had our Ruby with us. My wife had the sea bass and I opted for the pie of the day which was mince. For pudding we both had the biscoff cheesecake. All of the food was good, the service prompt and very friendly. I would highly recommend trying the Butchers Arms if staying in the area. The only downside is potentially finding a suitable parking spot on the street as the pub car park has limited spaces.

I was visiting from Cardiff and staying locally with my mother and we decided it would be nice to eat here as we heard that there were good reviews. We arrived early, few people there, and sat in the bar. The bar menu was unsuitable for me as I am a coeliac so I asked if there was an alternative menu. The young man behind the bar said we could order from the restaurant menu but didn't tell me we could also sit in the restaurant. I just assumed you had to book a table there. None of the items on the menu were last labelled GF so after my mother and husband had chosen their meals I went to ask what I could have. The barman didn't know so the chef was asked to come out. I asked about the honey glazed ham with red wine sauce on ly to be told the sauce had flour in it! I asked if this was cornflour, no normal flour?. I could have the steak or the chicken with cream and white wine sauce, which is what I chose. The meal was pretty good. My husband however ordered the turkey roast dinner and this was pretty awful. One very tiny cocktail sausage with bacon, three very tiny potatoes, not much turkey and vegetables that were overcooked and sparse. Extremely disappointing. Very pricey too! Myself and my mother decides to have a dessert and ordered the cherry and pistachio ice cream. The menu did not specify that anything came with it. Eventually after waiting approximately 20 minutes the ice cream arrived. Both very different desserts. My mothers ice cream was served in a chocolate lined wafer basket with a wafer in the top of the ice cream, two shortbread biscuits and a separate wafer biscuit as well with a few raspberries on the side. My ice cream was served in a very small earthenware dish with a few raspberries on the side, absolutely nothing else! No explanation no extra ice cream and the same price as my mother's dessert. The ice cream was lovely but the dessert was so disappointing. For a supposed French chef, he had no imagination and was completely uninterested in customer satisfaction. Overpriced poor quality food and poor customer service and a chef who couldn't care less. I will not...

We have visited the Butchers Arms Hepworth a few months ago and the food and service was fab. We visited again on Friday 3 Jan 2025 and the whole experience was appalling and disappointing. They had only a limited menu to choose from which was still the CHRISTMAS menu! Who wants more. Christmas food after nearly a month of the stuff already. This was not confirmed on their website either before we booked AND it was forcing you to choose two or three courses! The restaurant was cold and uninviting and with the exception of one other group at a table we were the only people in the restaurant side. The other table finished their meal and left. I ordered beer battered fish and chips as did my father in law. I could count the chips on just over one hand, my fish was grey looking and extremely oily. I had to ask for some tartare sauce and the waiter didn’t know if there was any available. He did find some. I did not eat the full meal as I had an oil slick on my plate. Not a pleasant experience. We ordered a bottle of Chenin blanc wine from South Africa but were brought siouvignon blanc from New Zealand ( still a nice wine but not what we ordered). Something had changed at this pub most likely new owners/management and might I say it’s for the worse. We raised these issues with the waiter who apologised but no offer to resolve or discount the bill which was £152.00 for 2 courses and drinks paid by my f-I-l who included a £20 tip which I certainly would not have included but he was paying the bill as a thank you for taking him with us when we went away for Christmas week. My opinion is that this pub is pretending to be something it no longer is by providing poor quality food based on its previous good reputation of excellent well cooked food. Quite frankly I get better fish and chips at the Whitby Whaler. Won’t...

We walked over from Holmfirth to Hepworth just to try the food at the Butchers Arms . We were not disappointed in any way! We were greeted by a beautiful building that gave an old world welcome with a real fire and a warm feeling as soon as we entered. It was a Thursday lunchtime so obviously it was quiet but other diners came in as we sat and enjoyed a relaxed pre lunch drink. The young lad that served us was friendly and polite and was knowledgeable about what was available. I won't comment on his age as I would consider that to be rude and unnecessary. The menu provided a reasonable choice of options. I would rather have a few dishes that are cooked well rather than pages of options that all taste the same. We opted for the fish and chips (the parmesan fries were provided at our request as an alternative) and it was delicious! The portion size was just right, beautifully presented and a lovely light batter on the fish . There was a slight hint of grey on fish which by the way is called 'the skin'. Not to everyone's taste perhaps but never mind. Water with ice and lemon was served as part of the meal which was delightful. All washed down with a cold pint and it was the perfect accompaniment to a walk on a sunny day in Yorkshire. I wish I'd had room for pudding but will try that...
