Having read the reviews, it is clear that these were posted prior to the current owners/managers taking over, as varied as the views are!
We bought 2 Groupon vouchers for 2 , 2 course meals about 3months ago and booked and confirmed our booking only to called on the evening of our booking( made approx 2 weeks earlier) that the pub was now under new management and meals would not be served until a couple of weeks hence. Okay I thought, no major problem, lets be a bit accommodating here and give them time to settle in and rebook a few week s further on , after our return from holiday as they had expressed their commitment to honour the Groupon vouchers up to the end of June.
Arrived Fri 22 June 7.30 expecting that in light of the pubs recent demice and the inconvenience caused to us ,we fully expected that some effort would have been made both in regard to meals available and the general atmosphere of the place.
Not to be , although 7.30 the much boasted about open fire was just about dead, the menu was lacklustre and came with soggy chips, a token salad with 1 slice of tomato, a bit of lettuce and some raw onion . 1 starter billed as Grilled Foccacia Bread with cheese, was more like 4 slices of thick white sliced toasting bread. Not good!
Coupled with all that the ( waitress/ owner ? ) was scruffy and unkempt and maybe that should have given us an idea of general quality of was to come , as it did, or didn't as it turned out.
Then to top it all , some" mouth on a stick " women at the bar proceeded to wax on about her recent holiday in Corfu at top the of her voice, so killing any pleasant conversation we might have had between ourselves to retreive something from the evening.
Came home looked at each other and the inevitable question " would you go there again " !
Not in a million years. Long live " The Sands House " and the " Wills On Ats " on your doorstep, both of which offer, consistantly excellant food and a good atmosphere and smart staff. You've no chance unless you smarten up your act.
I will temper my review, in accceptance of the fact that , this was a special voucher offer, but if they are looking to promote the business , why should the quality be compromised?
Would strongly suggest " Don't Go " unless subsequent reviews suggest otherwise.
Finally, it occurs, we were the only ones eating! certainly in the bar area anyway, tells you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWould love to leave a more positive review but after a short experience here itās hard to. Firstly, as they last time we were here we were told they donāt do food, we thought we would stop and eat our fish and chips in the garden. Parked up, found a table outside, proceeded to leave my mm eating while I ordered. Despite asking the fist lady for a half and then the lady who took over the order for a half, I was presented with a pint. I asked if it was a half and was told no. Said I told you twice and was rudely told I wouldnāt know I was on the back. Um..ok. Then rudely said that she would throw it away, at which I suggested she put it in a half pint glass. To which the ābarmaidā replied- āsuppose I couldā.
Then preceded outside to finish of the food and drink my gin. Oh no. Same lady followed me out about a minute later to tell me we couldnāt eat our own food in their garden. Mysterious how she didnāt know this before I paid for the drinks. Would have been nice to suggest we went and sat on the grass or at least finished our drinks but clearly service isnāt overly important at the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreJust arrived home today after a short break away. Fabulous location. Immaculate trendy pub - great atmosphere. Relaxing space to read etc after the weekend rush - super beer garden. No food - ( only street food days) - but this amiable place gives community space in abundance. We stayed in Deer View 1 bed apartment- splendid views - immaculately presented!! Compact - but everything you need for 2 people and a fur baby!! ( Weather - another story). Our only down side - very few eating places after the weekend. We should have checked - the Bulls Head offered a reasonable priced menu - with mid week offers - we enjoyed our meal. It seems most restaurants close until Wednesday/Thursday and we needed dog friendly . 2 breakfasts at the Wrinkled Stocking T room ( Nora Batty - Compo ). Again extremely friendly staff and quality food all day. Sadly the weather spoilt our walking plans!! In our 70's - really don't need ' walking in the rain ' .š« . Highly recommend this location and our accommodation was superb š š Thank you...
