The 3 stars are for food and service. The accomodation isn't worthy of any star. We stayed for 3 nights in February 2025 in a double room. On arrival the room seemed a little worn but ok for the price and adequate for our purpose, having driven over 5 hours to get there, to attend a funeral nearby.||After the first night if there was anywhere else we could have gone we would have left because this room is not fit to be hired out at the moment for a number of reasons:||The worst reason was the literally streaming, wet walls around the bed which occurred every night, drying out somewhat during the day but always damp, cold and extremely unpleasant to sleep and wake up next to. |The reason for this is no doubt 2 fold - |1) this is an exposed corner of an old building which doesn't have any adequate insulation so on cold nights (we had 1 - 3 degrees) the amount of condensation is immense.| 2) This is not helped by the double glazed window unit which is old, broken and does not function. It is actually coming away from the wall where the breeze blocks and a lot of cobwebs are exposed. The cold draft from the window can be felt even when sitting in bed. The (stained) curtains don't make any difference at all to this.||The toilet has a macerator pump which is excessively noisy and woke me up when used in the room next door a number of times. Also this toilet takes at least 7 or 8 minutes before it can be flushed again which is quite inconvenient for people sharing the room.||The wash basin (which is in the room) had a dripping hot water tap which we were told not to worry about as a plumber would be sorting it out next week. So the first night we had the sound of dripping water all night. In the morning when I took my wash bag out of the cupboard under the sink it was saturated and water stained as the top tap connector had leaked all through the night. The manager, did her best but we ended up having to empty a fast filling container from under the sink a couple of times which was very awkward and caused the water to go everywhere. (Whilst getting ready to go to a funeral!) Without this container the water would have been all over the floor and soaking through it. Fortunately an emergency plumber was called in to do a quick job on stopping the leak whilst we were out at the funeral - but it still needs to be done properly or the same problem will recur.||This was certainly not the kind of stay we had envisaged and then to only offer us a ÂŁ10 per night reduction is frankly quite appalling and insulting.||On the positive side the staff here are lovely and did everything they possibly could to assist us, in the absence of the owner. ||The chef was also very good and we enjoyed some good meals in the inn (the nut roast and sea bream were especially good). The breakfast was good - not a much choice but a very good cooked breakfast with excellent scrambled eggs.||It is very unfortunate that there has not been any proper investment into this once lovely old property which has caused the guest rooms to be not fit for purpose and therefore we would never stay here again and certainly would not recommend it to...
Read moreAre you having a pint? I believe the guy who gave it 5 stars and said the beer was great. I didn't have a pint. In fact when we got back from our meal in Hassocks (after the young barman had told us there was nowhere to eat within walking distance) at 9ish, the place was like the Marie Celeste and the bar was shut. We have entered the territory of BladeRunner.||||The Jack and Jill Inn is an old pub. When I say old, I mean from the last century when people smoked and drank in the evening. It is now falling part. People in summer come out, with their kids and drink in the garden. It has a car park. It is on an extremely busy A road. Inside, there's clearly no money to take up a carpet, let alone fix the chimney on the roof, which is wrapped in polythene. Fair enough, Paul, the very pleasant landlord, did tell us the room with the double bed was water damaged and he would give us a discount. He didn't tell us it smelled of rot. Or that it faced the main road which meant you were either deafened or absolutely boiling hot all night (we mixed and matched. All night.) The showerhead was so crusted with limescale that only the centre of it issued water ( very oddly). There were cobwebs in the corner and a layer of dirt along the skirting board. You couldn't make it up. Except it was what I expected, so I was prepared, with hard drugs (prescription). ||||I'm allergic to fabric conditioner so I'm not normal. We'd spoken on the phone about this and agreed that we'd have some 'new linen' on the bed, which they'd just ordered. (The idea that they could have rinsed the bedstuff was simply not considered or offered. It just didn't occur to them at all). I'm afraid the spirit of hostelry or hospitality has deserted the Marie Celeste. Off came the mattress cover, the pillows, the duvet (all drenched in the stuff) out came my own sheet, which I lay wrapped in, stifled and temazepammed. I put the rest in the wardrobe, with the towels to stop me feeling sick and getting a headache. What do they put in that stuff? Still, I completely understand that I'm not normal and most people really couldn't care less about cobwebs or washing powder or noise or curtains that don't keep out light. That's why I'm telling you what happened. So you can choose. This cost us £85, including the 'discount'. I wasn't really expecting better. Tempted to do a socio-economic analysis and do apologise, because they were very nice people, apart from not really being here. We did get a very full and enjoyable cooked breakfast. 8 til 8.30. Far too early for me to digest. No one asked for feedback. Probably stop letting the rooms...
Read moreI was crying on the way back from our visit to The Jack & Jill Inn just now. I booked a table for 2 adults and one toddler requesting a high chair. We arrived early to take our little one to the playground in the garden. Two broken toy cars with wobbly wheels and a bumpy slide. The garden was nasty looking and next to the highway so we went inside for some lunch. We were standing by the bar for ages because the staff somehow needed to move our table around? and then we had to wait for them to find us somewhere to sit in the empty restaurant. We ordered drinks and were placed at a table right next to the bar so people started quening up right next to us... Not the ideal place to eat having queuing people staring at you... We were told there were highchairs around the corner and to bring one over ourselves. There were no highchairs in said corner, and only then the staff found out that there weren't enough highchairs. So the thing I had specifically called and booked wasn't there. I didn't get a single apology for the inconvenience or anything. Today is father's day in my country and I couldn't even take my family out for a nice meal. The staff were very casual about thinking they had three highchairs instead of two (both occupied) and just left us to sit there with nothing. We didn't even get a menu and despite lots of people queuing up right next to our table, we were told to go back the way we came in order to see the menu AND order our food. Whilst others were standing right next to us being able to order from there!? So we decided to drink up and leave. About ten people drinking right next to our table made it was really loud and unpleasant. When you agree to providing enough highchairs, maybe just check that you actually have enough.... And apologise if you don't. Paid £12 for a glass of beer, a juice and a fruit shoot.... On...
