We are local and have eaten here quite a few times, but we most recently went on Mother’s Day and were really disappointed.
The place was packed on arrival for our 12pm booking, and despite us having called days in advance to book a table, there was no record of our booking. Speaking to other diners in the queue for the carvery and we discovered the same had happened to two large tables who had also called to book.
Despite many members of staff at the till area, we were left waiting by the door with no greeting or acknowledgment. It was about fifteen minutes before anyone came to see us, and there was no apology for the wait.
We were taken to our table and did order drinks straight away but no one gave us a menu. We knew we wanted carvery so asked for the tickets for those instead and then because the queue was so big we didn’t get any good until 1pm - an hour after we arrived. The meat and roast potatoes were lovely but the broccoli and cauliflower were undercooked.
The staff didn’t seem to have ownership of any set areas leading to really poor service. After we finished our carvery we sat around waiting for plates to be cleared and a dessert menu for ages but no one came to serve us; I had to catch the eye of a waiter before we were given any attention. It was about 1:45 before we ordered dessert and given we were supposed to vacate our table at 2pm we weren’t given much time to eat.
We ordered two desserts and one dessert was sent to the wrong table. Not a problem but the second dessert didn’t arrive until my partner had already finished. And when the second arrived it came with the other dessert we’d already been given.
No one came to ask us if we wanted the bill or more drinks etc so we went to the till ourselves to pay and they didn’t even have a full record of what we ordered and asked if we’d already paid some of the bill?
Appreciate it was much busier yesterday than it normally is but the day was really badly organised and there didn’t seem to be any sort of plan on what the staff...
Read moreFood and drink were both excellent, although the beer selection was a little thin. If you want a range of beers, better look elsewhere. Upon walking in, we seemed to be ignored until the barmaid finished her chat. No acknowledgement of us at all. There was nobody else being served so a little frosty for a reception. She was friendly, but it just felt like I was on a charm offensive to get any meaningful response from her. Customer service improvement would really add a lot, but maybe they do for the locals. As a visitor, I felt it took too much effort on my part to feel welcome.......UPDATE from 20/4/23.....Went back for a meal with my wife and things have gone downhill. Unfortunately, the previous response from the owner said that the miserable staff member who was more interested in her regulars seems to be still working there. FAO Management, she was somewhat mature with bottle blonde hair, and a fixed grimace. Maybe this will help you identify her. Further, We were charged GBP3 for a salad (some tomatoes and lettuce without any dressing) which the previous staff member had told us comes free with the order of the Thursday "Sizzler Special". Despite this, when we paid, we were told by this mature sourpuss that because it was ordered at 4.50pm, (but "delivered after 5pm") it did not qualify for the Thursday Special discount. Unfortunately, this information regarding times is not displayed anywhere on the menu, nor in the pub, rendering her excuse meaningless. Left with a real feeling of having been ripped off. Will be spending money elsewhere given this deliberately vague attitude to customer service in future. To be fair, the younger members of staff seemed much more interested in smiling and helping when they could. The older members might learn a thing or...
Read moreCalled in for lunch on our way north...the menu looked good. First impression was the manager was highly overbearing...she immediately approached the youngest in our party who is very shy and shrank back from her. Instead of reading this she pursued a convo with her until she actually put her head into her top to avoid the confrontation.. some people are not comfortable with strangers and I felt she should've read the clear body language and left her alone. Being awkward we ordered burgers without certain bits (tomato/bacon etc) and while the girl wrote this down I got a sense it wasn't going to be right.. as expected when they arrived the burgers were wrong. When we mentioned it what we think was the manager she reacted very badly snatched the plates away and immediately started shouting at the young waitress in full view of all customers. She didn't apologise she just huffed that it was a 'nightmare' quite loudly.. Anyway new burgers arrived... one was still wrong but we gave up..we felt unable to point it out again. The nuggets ordered on the kids meal were extremely greasy and one of the burgers got left anyway as the chicken had red veins in it The waiting girl was clearly new...she didn't know what to do with the bill when she brought it amd we could see her struggling with the pos machine..however the older lady spent the rest of her time talking to someone at a table while this poor girl struggled with the job. For someone who's never been in the inn before I must say the first impressions were.good...the food did not meet expectations but I absolutely could not wait to.get away from.the atmosphere that manager brought to the place. If I was the waiting staff I'd be looking for somewhere...
