Our first dining experience didn't meet the standard we were expecting. We decided to visit one evening for a meal after reading the reviews about The Railway.
Food We ordered a starter to share and mains. Our mains arrived very promptly and we queried we hadn't had our starters yet, the meals were quickly taken away again. The staff were very busy and we managed to suggest to the waitress that we cancel the starter so that our mains were not sat waiting for us to finish. The main meals were then brought back to the table. Both meals were ok but felt the main components of the meal lacked flavour for the price.
Atmosphere The atmosphere of the pub was loud and lively. Whilst we enjoyed music from the live singers it was quite loud in the dining area next to the bar, making it difficult to hear one another. There were also a number of children running around and screaming. They were lying across the steps to the bar making it difficult for anyone to pass, staff were stepping over them whilst serving and clearing tables. The seating/dining area to the right of the bar, where you enter the pub, is probably the better of the two areas to be seated.
Overall an ok experience, staff were pleasant and friendly, didn't receive our starter, food was average on...

The Pecking Orders Verdict. CHOO! CHOO! or should that be CHEW! CHEW!? Overall this busy pub/restaurant provides a pleasant evening with a nice atmosphere. On the whole the food was good with the exception of the flat iron steak which was jaw achingly chewy and lacking in flavour. Prawn starter was good, burger was more than acceptable. The truffle fries were the star of the show 😋 delicious! Desserts were a mixed bag, while the Sticky Toffee Pudding was somewhat lacking in flavour and pretty mediocre, the Tiramisu was good and the Honeycomb parfait a well balanced end to the meal. Service was lacking somewhat, polite and friendly but we were left without drinks for some time and not checked on until we had finished. A long wait between ordering and each course. And without drinks that's a no no from us.
We would go back again but not for steak and not if time...
Read moreMy review is based on Sunday lunch of which we have eaten there for the last four Sundays unfortunately I don't think we will be going back which is a shame. The first time we ate here the service was a problem, the wait was very long and things were forgotten, the manager kindly sorted this out, but the food was lovely so we went back the following week which again the food was good, we made this our new Sunday lunch venue. However the following week the food was ok but definitely not as good so we returned last week, I have to say the food was terrible the gravy was like warm water, the Yorkshire puddings dry the roast potatoes were awful the cauliflower cheese which as usual now is an extra cost was hard and dry, I left most of my dinner I told the waitress and was told they would tell the chef. It's such a shame as the staff are very nice the venue is lovely but when you are paying nearly £50 a time for two people for one course it has to be consistently good and quite honestly it is not at all, the chef can see what he is serving there really was no excuse for...
