Betley Tea Room — Restaurant in Newcastle-under-Lyme

I have been here on two occasions now, both have been disappointing. The room is nicely decorated, there are good baby changing facilities and food is pleasant, though a touch expensive for what’s given. On the whole, has the potential to be really nice which is what makes this more disappointing and the reason for my review.

From a customer service perspective I had the same girl serve me both times, she had dark hair and glasses. The first occasion she told me that there was a delay of 10 minutes for food and asked if we would be happy to wait this time. With it being a short period of course we said it’s fine. 40 minutes passed, there was no further acknowledgement of this and I had to approach staff myself to ask for an update. (Bear in mind that we were the only other table in there as well, aside from a separate larger party and table of 2). I had with me my baby daughter who was only months old and it was a really hot day and the place had no air con so it very uncomfortable to be in.

I returned on a cooler day hopeful for an improved experienced. Again atmosphere wasn’t good because there were constant wasps flying around. No attempts made from staff to deal with these. I overheard one staff say they thought there was a wasps nest and they had left the front entrance open in the hope that they would go out. A pretty useless thing to do because if they can go out then they can also come in and with a wasp nest outside it’s inevitable that they will do. I asked the same girl on the counter if she could assist with the wasps and she said there was nothing she could do but offered me a fly swatter. I don’t think it should be the responsibility of the customer to have to do this.

Finally I would like to add that I was unimpressed that at the end of the meal one of the other staff members who I had not previously spoken to (think she may have been from the kitchen, not sure) came over and put her hands in my pram and touched my baby. Lovely family run business, using locally sourced produce. We stopped by chance for a light lunch (jacket potato for one and an egg sandwich for another). Great food and beautifully presented. Brilliant that they do loose tea that taste so much better than teabags. There were a wide selection of scones and cakes, but we were too full to enjoy these, so a further visit is required. Friendly and efficient staff. Would definitely recommend, but check opening hours and perhaps call to reserve a table...

We had afternoon tea here for my daughters birthday treat, absolutely delicious locally sourced homemade sandwiches and cakes, so yummy! The staff were fabulous, excellent customer service, so friendly and so professional - they really went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed and took in to account different allergies providing such tasty food - really pretty surroundings with a great atmosphere.
