We had a lovely Sunday lunch and were welcomed in by happy, friendly, professional and accommodating staff. The Sunday lunch menu consisted of a choice of 3 roasts, plus two other choices and deserts. There wasn't a choice of starters, and no fish choice on the mains. We had heard that the portions here were very generous (they were), so we asked for our vegetables to be served separately, which they were. Thank you. We both had the beef, which was nicely cooked, but not very tender. The veg consisted of cauliflower cheese, parsnips, carrots, braised white cabbage, fine beans. Together with roasties, stuffing ball, lovely Yorkshire pud and gravy. All wonderful. We both had a dessert, which were also very generous. A choice of Devon cheese would have been welcomed. All in all we had a very good lunch, and the service couldn't have been better, thank you. The Crown is a glorious place to eat or drink, I only wished that we could have stayed closer, so as to just pop in for a few bevvies. Great beer by the way. We'll be back.

Staying at the local Caravan Club site, we wandered down to West Down village to try out the pub. Wow 😲! What a super place to spend a couple of hours over dinner and a few drinks. The evening was balmy so we decided to eat in the garden; a beautiful haven, peaceful and absolutely alive with birds enjoying their evening feed at the feeders dotted around the garden. We’d bought some drinks at the bar on our way in, but were pleasantly surprised when a member of staff came to our garden table to take our food order - not a commonplace occurrence in many pubs. We sat and enjoyed our drinks, the evening sun and the birdsong. Our meals arrived quickly and we were both extremely satisfied with our choices - fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked and very generous portions for the price - win/win/win! Wish we could afford to buy the house for sale opposite so we could enjoy this pub every day! Worth a journey to sample what they offer. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Deceivingly large inside an dog friendly which was important having been hiking all day. Staff were lovely a helpful. Onto the important part the food was amazing, starter of whitebait, the burger which had a range of options was quite possibly the best burger I’ve ever had (of which I’ve had a lot in alit of places) then onto the desert I’ve never had cinnamon brioche bread and butter pudding with clotted cream but this was amazing (photo attached) And all for a reasonable price with decent beers and wine. Worth a visit

I’ve been here three times previously and each time was fantastic!! I visited again this week with family and friends. I’d been raving about how good this pub was. We had a large party and were seated at the end of the restaurant. Unfortunately we were next to the toilets which had not been cleaned and had an over powering smell of urine: I asked for the patio doors to be opened and was told under no circumstances were we to go outside into the garden. The waitress seemed rushed to take our order and when an additional five minutes were requested it seemed to put her out? I’d booked this table in the morning so you would have thought there wouldn’t be any problem. I complained about the smelly toilets and was told they would be cleaned later, apparently the pub had closed all afternoon so why weren’t they cleaned then????? The doors really need a self closing mechanism so they don’t stay open meaning you don’t have to keep getting up and closing them yourself: Not really what you want when dining!!! To be fair the food was really good as it had been previously Perhaps we just got an off day but if this is normal service Then I have to ask what has...

A Proper Devon Gem – Exceptional Roast and a Lovely Stay!

I stayed at The Crown Inn in Westdown recently and was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. It’s exactly what you hope for in a traditional country pub - full of character, warm hospitality, and a real sense of care in everything they do.

The highlight was without a doubt the Sunday roast. The lamb was beautifully cooked and tender, with crispy roast potatoes, fluffy homemade Yorkshire puddings, fresh seasonal veg, and a rich, proper gravy that brought it all together. You could tell it was all homemade and prepared with real attention to detail - comforting, generous, and absolutely delicious.

The pub itself is cosy and welcoming, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. My room upstairs was spotless, peaceful, and comfortably furnished, ideal for a quiet night away in the countryside.

Westdown is a lovely little spot, and The Crown is the kind of place that makes you want to return before you’ve even left! I’ll absolutely be back next time I’m in North Devon - thank you to all who made this trip...
