I went today for the Sunday carvery - my first Sunday roast whilst in Newcastle and an excellent experience. In summary, though see more detailed comments below: welcoming staff, lively atmosphere, huge portion sizes, great tasting food and above all splendid value for money.
The lady on the Bar was friendly and welcoming, as was the lady serving the meat/potatoes etc. The carvery was efficiently run and all served warm. The pub was busy which added to a lovely atmosphere!
The portion sizes were huge and unlike many establishments , they did not hold back on the meat! The latter (beef and gammon in my case) were cooked to perfection, as were the accompanying vegetables. Piping hot and replenished regularly! The man walking with replenishment to and from the kitchen (in the orange apron) got his steps up ensuring this was the case - kudos to him!
A very nice touch was the wide array of sauces (mustard, horse radish, mint sauce etc) and the ability to take a gravy pot back to the table.
The Yorkshire Pudding deserves a special mention - possibly the best I have had (and clearly homemade!).
There was an exceptional range of desserts including cake, cheesecake and more conventional offerings such as apple crumble/sticky toffee pudding. These were displayed in a beautifully organised cabinet and were huge in size (excellent value for money, as with the main course!). I went for the chocolate cake which was delicious - rich and fluffy offered with the option of squirty cream (a nice touch, but I did not opt for this - the cake was perfect without it). This was personally delivered to the table with a smile (characteristic of the friendly hosting).
The pub was clean and the carvery system well organised. Considering the large number of customers, I did not have to wait long at all (credit to the lady serving for doing so quickly whilst maintaining a smile!). Additionally, plates were cleared quickly and man doing this was attentive.
Conclusion - a hidden local gem, and I would highly recommend! To the owners, keep this up and continue doing what you are doing (hearty/home cooked food at such great value).
Thanks for a nice...
Read moreVery dirty place, food is cheap but overrated and if you like your hygiene then avoid it at all costs. The food is all on a hot plate that looks like it has never been washed. I had gammon and with that got half a plate of beef as all meats are touching as there just rammed on the edge of it. This has got to be seen to be believed. All furniture looks from a car boot fair, I was sat watching them prep orders out of a mouldy back room, there was a side door open full of bin liners. It would be cleaner eating if I was sat in a skip, won't be back. No hidden agenda as the reply states, and I did indeed report to the...
Read moreI've driven past this place many times and always thought it was closed. I've since found it its closed 3 days per week and suppose just never driven past when it was open! I recently attended an event and the food was provided by here. The spread was 5* - the home baked mince pie was delicious and the cheesecake!! When I say its been YEARS since I had one like it... I've been trying to find this cheesecake since I was in primary school! Today we came for a Sunday dinner. It was absolutely delicious, home made Yorkshire Puds, healthy amount of meat... Puts the big named carveries to shame! We shall definitely...
