Stayed for one night and felt very tired the next day despite trying to get an early night. Room much smaller than described, quite clean but tired looking. Bathroom was spacious. Room very warm to the point that we were waking up every two hours, tried using the fan provided which helped a little but very noisy so defeated the object. Then woken up by the drayman at 6.30am making a racket outside the window with beer barrels which was ridiculous, had to get up in the end no point trying to get back to sleep! Whilst the coffee machine was a nice touch some instructions on use would help (google came in handy) and a description of what the different coloured pods are as it was a bit of a lucky dip otherwise! We are not all experts on lazzava coffee! No hairdryer in the room therefore unable to wash hair, if I had known this I would have brought my own but you assume that somewhere like this would have them. Thought they would have supplied some biscuits in the room as most places do but nothing. Evening meal was very nice however breakfast very average, tasteless hash brown and over salted bacon. Very disappointed in the breakfast buffet option, consisted of some cereal, sliced bread, sliced cheese and a few croissants, fruit salad was dismal.. where were the bluberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, apple .. basically just consisted of pineapple and melon so didn't bother with anything offered by the buffet at all. As said evening meal was delicious however very overpriced and the drinks prices are extortionate but I guess with no local competition they can charge what they like. Overall unfortunately not the relaxing restful stay we...
Read moreSituated in the beautiful English village of Mellor, nr Blackburn. I was impressed with the choice of food, a number of vegetarian starters and a few mains although nothing is marked up, so you'll need to ask to be sure. They do ask if you have any allergies or dietary requirements when you sit down and it's stated on the menu. I had the salt and pepper tempura vegetables from the lunch menu £10.50, which was nice but they only used 3 vegetables; cauliflower, red pepper and carrots, as I'm not keen on cooked carrots I wasn't too pleased. But the batter was nice and crisp. My partner had smoked haddock fishcakes with poached egg £10.50 and loved it and my friends both had beef lasagne £13.50 which they said was tasty but a little on the runny side which made it difficult to eat with a knife and fork, they needed a spoon. The decor is nice and you get linen napkins which is better than paper, but we received mixed service from the staff, some were friendly and helpful, taking our photos when asked, but others were a bit brusk and we were generally ignored throughout, we had to keep asking for service, extra drinks, coffee, the bill etc. Nobody asked if we were OK, if we enjoyed the meal or even if we wanted dessert/coffee. However, it is a hotel as well as a restaurant and people were checking in, I think for a wedding this weekend, so the staff were busy. That's the only reason I can think why the service was poor, as the restaurant was quiet, but I'm being generous. The toilets were a little grubby as well, there were no paper towels to dry your hands on and the waste paper basket was overflowing onto the floor. Obviously there's no...
Read moreHeard some good things about The Millstone so decided to book a table for our anniversary meal, had the scallops and fillet steak and the wife had the chipolatas and steak pudding.
Have to say the food was excellent, well seasoned and cooked, scallops are notoriously risky to order if not cooked correctly or if not good quality or fresh, first impressions were cemented with that dish spot on. Fillet steak arrived what seemed instantly after the starters (this is a plus for us as I know some people like to relax or have a drink or 2 after a course) cooked as requested and left to rest, seasoned bang on and a lovely cut of meat, comes with the usual sides of a mushroom and tomato with thick chips but I changed these for thin truffle fries and buttered greens.
Wife's sausages and pudding were spot on full of flavour and nice portion sizes, the only single hiccup in the otherwise perfect meal was the curry sauce I decided to try on the side, flavour was good but just too watery for my own taste, not a big deal but just a honest opinion.
Have to admit have visited other places marked as more fine dining than a standard home cooked pub style and the meals and service at the Millstone blow them away, lovely staff and relaxed non pushy atmosphere and fantastic dishes.
Will definitely drive out again to try the Sunday roast, thoroughly enjoyed our meals and found a nice little gem to add...
