We visited this venue on a very busy Friday night.
I want to be very honest about my experience, it was a very chaotic experience here and I wouldn't choose to come here again: that being said, there are some positives which I will share:
The good: The food was delicious, portions were generous. There was ample seating for our party. There was no loud music, which made it easy to converse with the family. The decor was dated, but I liked this, it had charm and didn't look modern and tacky.
The bad: the parking is on stone chippings, no markings, so the car park was completely full with many cars parked haphazardly. We had to park down the road. The prices were eye-watering, I believe the cheapest option was ham, egg and chips for £16!! It is a very small menu, very limited starters. We had children with us, there was an hour and a half wait for food, thank heavens for free WiFi! The whole place is very snug, once you're seated it is a huge inconvenience to try to leave your seat, I would not recommend this place to parents.
The ugly: the food took about an hour and a half to be served, 45 minutes into our wait, 2 members of our party were served, meaning they had completely finished when the rest of the food arrived. We ordered desserts, when they were served the waitress didn't know what any of the items were, nor did we quite frankly. And again, at £8, very steep pricing for some warmed up waffles and a few scoops from a tub of ice cream.
I do feel there were certain factors which resulted in a largely negative experience: it was a Friday night, therefore busier. We had kids who were hungry and complaining and we hadn't planned for being there for longer than an hour and a half. They were possibly understaffed as the older waitress was visibly stressed, she even ranted about all the jobs she was having to get done when one of my family members lightheartedly joked about the wait times.
Perhaps on a different evening the mishaps wouldn't have occurred.
My overall takeaway from the visit was: delicious food but not a good place to bring children and very...
Read moreI run a dining club, choosing a different venue every Saturday. We have our favourites, one of them being the Royal Oak. We usually visit approx every six weeks. Food is perfectly cooked and presented as always, and service is brilliant. However, tonight our bubble was burst! Because of one thing. Two of our party of 7 had a goats cheese salad, and asked for new potatoes to accompany it. The food was as always wonderful! However, when we received the bill, the charge for 2 portions of new potatoes (2 dishes consisting of 5 potatoes each) was £10!!! I queried this with the waiter, he made an enquiry, and said that unfortunately that was correct. I asked to speak with the manager, the only person behind the bar. When I queried the potato charge, he said, "we have to charge that to stay open"! I was taken aback! What a ludicrous reply. So had we not ordered the potatoes, the pub would had closed??? There were 10 potatoes, the charge was £1 each! This actually equates to a bag of potatoes costing £1, is a thousand % profit!. Absolutely ludicrous, unfortunately this spoiled our whole evening. We spent over £200 including drinks this evening, and unfortunately we will not be going back. Tonight there were only half of our club in attendance. Our club has 14 members, so unfortunately, the £10 for 10 potatoes, will cost you dearly, as you have lost our club! The restaurant was empty this evening, our table of 7, a table of 2, and one other small table. Surprisingly empty for a sat night, when we left at 9.15, there were only 3 people left drinking at the bar, and one of those left at the same time. What a shame, that one of our favourite eating places, will not see us anymore. I hope you don't have to close, due to the lack of sale of new...
