I'd been planning a solo trip to Scotland (from USA)for a few years. Bit by bit, the trip by bicycle was coming together with a lodging combination of hotels (including CitizenM, and a victorian style place in Oban), hostels, camping, and...a remaining hole that needed to be filled. ||I had two-day gap near the final days of the plan. I knew my late-trip stopping point would be somewhere near Tobermory, but NOT Tobermory. I'm sure it is a fine town, but I was bikepacking. Jostling a loaded bike through tourists on busy streets would already have happened in Oban a few days earlier. So, I settled on finding a place near or in Dervaig. Other than seeing a few online images of that cute village, the main draw was that it fit as the last piece of covering enough miles to eventually make a train back to Glasgow. My searching turned up a few lodging options, including The Bellachroy. It looked nice. Had food. It fit the trip. Oh, and the price seemed very fair based on what I was viewing online. So, I booked it. I didn't even look at Trip Advisor or other review sites. I just grabbed the dates and filled a gap.||It turned out to be a brilliant move. I'd stay at The Bellachroy again. In fact, I intend to make a return trip to the Ilse of Mull and will build in more days with The Bellechroy as my "base camp." ||The ownership is attentive. The inn and restaurant/bar clean. The staff was delightful. The room was perfect and bed comfy. Food was satisfying (a nice breakfast came with the room, and I purchased dinner at the restaurant both nights, especially enjoying the Ulva Meat Pie). The inn had a safe place for me to store my bike. And there is a wonderful bakery/seafood/sandwich shop just around the corner. (The name escapes me.)||As I reflect back on my 17 days in Scotland which included time in Pitlochry, Aberfledy (love that town), Dalwhinnie, and a few other spots, Dervaig proved to be a gem equal to any because of...
Read moreWe recently spent 4 nights at this charming hotel. We liked the idea of being somewhat close to Tobermory, but in a quieter setting, and we were so glad we chose the Bellachroy! The friendliest staff, our room was spotless and spacious and our ensuite bathroom was great. This unassuming little gem is nestled in the small village of Dervaig, which we enjoyed discovering on foot. We weren't expecting much from the restaurant, but WOW, it was fantastic! We had 2 dinners here and they were both amazing. I suggest making a reservation as the first afternoon we arrived they were already fully booked full for dinner that evening, and the dining room is small. One night we both had the lobster special (lobster caught that morning) and it was superb. Our second dinner I had that evening's special, which were mussels, and they were honestly some of the best I've ever had (I grew up in the Seattle area and was raised on fresh seafood). My husband had a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak, which he was very pleased with. Their breakfast was great with lots of choices. It is about a 20-25 minute drive into Tobermory on single track road the entire way, so keep that in mind. The weather was smashing while we were there and we enjoyed sitting at their outdoor picnic tables with our pints from their wee pub in the afternoon and evening. The restaurant and pub are definitely where the locals socialize. We were very happy with our stay at the Bellachroy and highly recommend it, especially if you like being out in the quiet countryside. We were sad to leave and hope to return on...
