Lovely traditional style building set in to the landscape right next to the car park then it's a short walk uphill to the stones. The stones are free to visit so no need to pay. Thee are clear signs to ask folk not to climb the stones but sadly we did see some kids sitting on top, being encouraged by their parents for a photo. The site is very special and wonderfully situated on a hill top surrounded by lochs. I'd highly recommend a visit if you are on Lewis. Its about 40 minutes from Stornoway. In the visitors centre there are toilets, a cafe, a shop and museum (the museum is the only part you pay to enter, we didn't go in as kids were too young and hungry). The food in the cafe was lovely but the menu was a bit limited. See photo. We sat outside in the small patio with the dog. It was nice and sheltered. The staff were very helpful.

These guys have really made an effort to make the visitor centre a welcome respite from the cold winds you’ll face visiting the stones. They even built a proper dry stone wall to house the exhibition. Coffee was good, too. Tip: the COOKED BREAKFAST here looks excellent. Exhibition requires an entrance fee (skipped this) but the stones are free (or donations) and much more spectacular than you’d believe from photos.

Bit disappointing that the only sign you get to say you’re currently closed is on the fencing to the building work when you get there, esp when there are loads of signs about parking whilst you drive down. There’s a temp truck for coffees and a couple of porta style loos till 31 Oct, no info about reopening.

It’s such a shame that they stopped serving hot food at 2.30. That wasn’t really clear til we got here and we might have been able to time it differently. At least 3 more disappointed couples / groups came in asking for hot food after us too. The coffee (oat flat white) & vegan fruit flapjacks were lovely and the staff...
