Shockingly expensive for a shabby hotel with appalling food, little charm, and unfriendly staff. It is difficult to run a hotel in the Highlands of Scotland. Business is extremely seasonally dependent. Staff are scarce. Buildings are often old and difficult to maintain. I understand the challenges, but none of these can excuse the experience I had last week. I paid £135 for a small double room without a bathroom, a rare anachronism even in rural Scotland. The room was relatively clean but dusty and tired. The television did not appear to be connected to an aerial. The WiFi didn’t work either. I checked in at the earliest time possible and the toilet did not appear to have been cleaned from the evening before and was peppered with mould. Although I already felt I was paying above the odds for a shabby room with limited amenities, I was not prepared to be so mercilessly robbed when I dined at the hotel’s Stag Restaurant. The menu was extremely limited with no sign of the local fish, meat, and other produce advertised in the guest information book. Almost £10 for poor quality bread with a bowl of humus and a few sticks of celery. £22 for one of the saddest burgers I have seen. I did find that somewhat amusing and have shared a picture for that reason. Bottom of the barrel stuff at jacked up prices to take advantage of tourists with no other options. In all fairness, the selection of beer and whisky was decent and sensibly priced which came as something of a surprise. Finally, much of this could be excused if my hosts were more hospitable. I understand the hotel is family run and that it was a mother, father, and son who served me. While I normally wouldn’t want to complain about staff in these circumstances, I found them all to be surly and actually rude. I don’t need the full Highland welcome, but I found them to be truly cold towards guests and acted as if their jobs were beneath them. And maybe they are right to act that way, they clearly should be nowhere near the hospitality industry. This was what offended me the most: when your hotel and restaurant are as poor as this, why on earth wouldn’t you at least take the simple step to be friendly and welcoming to your...
Read moreGood and convenient location. But very unprofessional staff/management/owner. Apparently the dampness and state of repair of some joints in our bathroom (room 10) has led to thick dark mould patches. Their smell filled the whole bathroom immediately. We checked in around 4pm to only leave our bags, go out for a lovely mountain walk and come back after midnight when we discovered the state of the bathroom and shower. The electrical shower made some unusual noises and suddenly stopped pumping out water mid shower, continuing with the loud concerning noises. Better switched that off and cancelled the shower. Understandably no one can address this issue in the middle of the night. Told the staff (which was presumably the owner, he didn’t introduce himself at all) the next morning that I’m concerned about the mould and the shower that wasn’t working and been told that “he doesn’t believe me”. Convinced him to come with me to have a look at the mould and shower and he addressed it with “Oh this is just the normal buildup of mould that you get in showers, we only clean this once a year in winter, this is normal.”
This attitude is very concerning and also very unprofessional. I won’t come back.
Although we weren’t able to use the electrical shower properly because of its fault the owner only very hesitantly deducted 10£ of the total bill. He was very nervous and surely not comfortable with customers that have a reasonable complaint.
Only later that day I discovered from our colleague that we travelled with that her shower didn’t have enough water pressure, there were only few drops dripping out of the shower head, so she skipped the shower too.
I believe there are a few issues with this hotel that needs to be addressed, I personally could deal with defects, low water pressure and other things easily if you’re not accused of lying by the hotel owner or staff, this is the most concerning...
Read moreMy Wife and I had a lovely nights stay at the Kinlochewe hotel. We were welcomed by Donald the Manager of the hotel and shown to our ground floor room that had everything that we needed. My Wife especially liked the small complimentary bottles of shampoo/shower gel and I enjoyed chocolate biscuits! The room was of adequate size and clean as you'd expect. There was a residents lounge that we used to plan our next day's hike where there were plenty of couches available and I found these to be very comfy. The couches came in handy again after our evening meal which was lovely, the food really went beyond my expectations. My Wife had the beer battered fish and triple cooked chips and I had the Butternut Squash, chickpea and root vegetable curry. The food was really tasty and the vegetables were clearly fresh. Despite being pretty much full we shared an Apple crumble which came with custard and ice cream, also well tasty. The 'Stag' bar was really something else, they had two local ales on tap and shelves pretty much stacked to the ceiling with many many whiskies, lots of different gins and a host of other drinks. We both slept really well with the mattresses being as comfy as they come, the hotel was also very quiet even though I understand that they were fully booked. Breakfast was lovely with cereal, yoghurt and toast in plentiful supply along with a choice of porridge or cooked breakfast. Following a meat free diet I was pleased that they had vegetarian sausages. We both opted for scrambled eggs having noted a review before we booked that said that this was a great option, they didn't disappoint! All in all a very tasty and plentiful breakfast served in good time. The staff never seem to stop in this hotel and they really do a fantastic job especially given that they seem to be a small team. Keep up the good work, we'll be...
