Pub looked lovely and staff very warm and welcoming BUT let down majorly by rooms and food.
The Room: Our room was a few doors along the road from the pub in a bigger house - at first glance room was lovely, decorated tastefully and clean but later on realised a few annoyances
The food: When we arrived for check in we were advised food is available in bar and were provided dinner times etc - we were also advised that we needed to pre-order breakfast for following morning - this was no problem. However, it would have been really helpful if a dinner menu and the breakfast pre-order sheet had been provided in our room. We went along to the pub for food, it was ‘okay’ - not a huge selection on the menu. I asked what the pasta special was and informed it was macaroni cheese (to be honest was expecting a nice pasta dish) But I ordered it anyway and it came with cheesy garlic bread. But it arrived it was penne pasta caked in heavy stodgy cheese sauce - with a hair in it. the cheesy garlic bread was so soggy it was like chewing a sponge. Clearly had been over-reheated in the microwave. My partner had the scampi and chips and said it was ok but then later that night/following day had a bad tummy (it may or may not have been the meal) but everything tasted frozen and re-heated. Including the onion rings we had as a side - they were very obviously frozen (like Iceland style) and were soggy too. Even the drinks we ordered - my partner ordered fresh orange & lemonade and it was a watery flat substance. We never did receive the breakfast pre-order forms and to be honest by the end of our evening meal we had already decided to skip the breakfast.
After dinner we took the 30min drive into Helensburgh to the 24hr Asda and bought a couple of smoothies and cereal bars for breakfast instead.
All in all a big let down with the B&B, but annoyingly everything could have easily been avoided with just a little attention to detail. Once we left we drove past lots of other little Inns and hotels and we wished we had booked into one of those instead.
We were only there for 1 night as we were out hillwalking the following day before heading home and all we wanted was a cheap and cheerful place where we could get a nice meal and a comfortable nights sleep and this place failed on both counts. We definitely won’t be...
Read moreWe found ourselves stranded in The Anchor Inn. Heading from an overnight stay in Arrochar on our way home to Renfrewshire & East Ayrshire. Due to extreme flooding, fallen trees & landslides, all roads were closed completely. Initially, we went into the pub for a 'comfort' break, but found a lovely wee corner (table & chairs) where we were allowed to charge our phones. We decided to order teas/coffees, which we were pleasantly surprised to find, were free of charge for everyone. Good auld Scottish hospitality at it's best. After we'd been there a few hours, we ordered ourselves some food. Two of us had burgers, and two had steak pie. All of us really enjoyed our food, (approx £15 ea). Not long after we'd finished dinner, we were informed that one road had been reopened. For us, it would be a long way round, but worth it, if it meant we could eventually get home that night. We were so grateful for the hospitality shown by The Anchor Inn, and in the future, would consider booking one of their rooms upstairs. On a nice day, it's in the most perfect location. Right by the loch side, beside the Post Office & a few shops. The staff were lovely and the place itself had a very welcoming environment. Well be back, by choice,...
Read moreWe arrived to find that our booking coincided with a 60th birthday party for the owner's mother. However, our welcome from Jamie was warm and tinged with his own sense of humour. Parking is on the road but we found a space in the lay-by opposite the Anchor. The room was perfectly adequate with a great view over the loch; great value given the low price charged. The bathroom was tiny, with a sink, shower and toilet but, again, more than adequate for a short stay. Towels were small but very soft and fluffy and lots of them.|We were offered dinner but, given it felt as though the whole village had packed into the bar for the party, that didn't seem practical and Jamie suggested we just buy a drink and get stuck into the party buffet, which we did. We even managed to find two seats. The music was great and although very audible from our room, to be fair it stopped shortly after 10pm and we managed a good night's sleep.|We had ordered bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and received huge apologies that there were only two rolls left for the two of us. They were more than adequate (apparently the standard order is two rolls each) and we were only charged for a child's portion.|Overall a great one night stay en route to...
