TLDR; I ran for a non-existent scone, and it was still 5 stars. Before I started my hike around the Quiraing I had a hankering for a scone and upon searching ā€œsconeā€ I saw a review for The Hungry Gull with a picture of a delectable looking scone. But alas, I noted that they closed between 3:30 and 5:30, and I had left my hike’s departure time too late… as I saw it, I had one option to secure the scone. My hike had to become a trail run. I dashed around the trail through cloud and howling rain, feet soaked from the marshy hill above the craggy rocks, thinking all the time of the scone awaiting me below. I made my way to the car and sped down the mountain to this gorgeous cafĆ©. I should have been so disappointed that there were no scones left for the day… but it is a testament to the strength of the establishment that literally every other baked good on display looked so wonderful as to keep my spirits high! I ended up ordering the soup of the day (tomato and basil) and a slice of carrot cake with an appropriate icing to cake ratio, not over the top, very much as how one would make it at home. In fact, that’s how it all was - homemade and lovely. Service was excellent, very sweet staff. And little details like when I asked for butter for my bread, they bought me a packet that wasn’t rock solid from the fridge as it so often is, but perfectly softened and ready to spread.

We just stopped by to express our gratitude. We ate at your restaurant a few days ago: we ate excellently, enjoyed the home-cooked food and your hospitality, which made us feel right at home, and upon leaving... we discovered we had a flat tire and it had gone flat while we were eating. My wife and I speak Catalan and Spanish, learned French in high school, and a little English at work, but not enough to have a long conversation with the rental car operators, so after trying for a while, I decided to ask for help. We want to extend a huge thank you to Rhys, without whose help we'd still be at the door of "The Hungry Gull" (although it wouldn't be a bad idea to be able to enjoy your food every day either). Thank you so much for taking the time (I think you'd already finished your workday) to help us with the Europcar helpline, always smiling. On your website, you talk about your dedication to serving the community, and I would add, to visitors as well. Thank you so much. I don't know how we would have managed it without your help. Hugs from Catalonia.

We popped into this gem of a community cafe on a Thursday evening without booking, and got their last free table. From the start the service was friendly, genuine and prompt. They provided water and treats for our two dogs, and we were immediately struck by the warm, cosy atmosphere. The food was excellent - I had the best Caesar salad of my life, with perfectly cooked buttermilk chicken, sourdough croutons and delicious anchovies, while my husband had the fish&chips - great portion size and tender, crispy battered fish. I finished up with a great Mocha, again up there with the best I've had. The ladies that served us were all polite, friendly and helpful. The music was also perfect, so much so we asked what playlist they were using and listened to it on our drive home! Whoever dreamt up this relaxed little cosy cafe has executed it perfectly - we would recommend to anyone and hope to pop back before our holiday ends šŸ™ƒ

Lovely beautiful place! We had lunch there today and they were so friendly and attentive to both of us as well as our rescue dog. The food is just our type of food - vegan friendly options and oat milk too! They had matcha but it wasn't on the menu as it was on a chalk board instead - I instead got a chai latte with oat milk and it was sensational. I'll be back for that matcha though! The food really hot then spot and you can tell it was made fresh that day - which is a bonus! The veggie options were obviously not an afterthought, unlike other spots around the country, so this is welcomed! They have cute merch too and the views are wonderful. They also have a high chair for kids and it's super family friendly! A little warning for those visiting on a bank holiday, the wait is long but worth it so you should either come early and expect to wait or come really late and walk right in. Otherwise you'll be standing there 30-45 mins like we did. This is not a negative because, as I said, it's worth it. However, you need to know this so you don't come disappointed! The car park isn't too enormous so coming at better times helps. Alternatively, if you're staying longer than a bank holiday, come when it's quiet and you'll enjoy it even more. Obviously costs are high (especially without sides included) but this is becoming commonplace everywhere and is a sign of the times. I certainly don't feel like I've been shafted here! We already know we're coming back and have planned our next meal, which is obviously a great sign! Great work to the whole team for putting this...

Only 1 star ever given to a restaurant: Wait staff needs proper training on how to treat customers.

If interested here is the whole story:

We just drove in from Inverness and searched Google Maps for a place to dine and enjoy the country side.

The time was 2 pm and the website said it closed at 4 pm so we made our way to what we thought would be a quaint restaurant on the shore.

Upon our arrival we were told that they stopped serving food at 3 pm. We had explained that we were disappointed that Google Maps stated they closed at 4 pm.

The lady who we spoke to said that she was in charge of the website and instantly became very confrontational. She pulled out her phone and showed us the text portion of the website that stated food was no longer served after 3 pm.

This somehow became a personal insult to her...we had not eaten all day and we're 45 minutes from any other restaurants. She had stated that we could get coffee and a pastry.

Famished, we asked for a peice of cake. She told us in we would have to wait; almost like we offended her.

She was in my opinion, becoming very confrontational and rude to a couple who had not eaten all day and drove to a very isolated area.

I felt we were being mistreated and therefore let her know that we would wait but that we often leave reviews of the restaurants that we eat at; especially when they are good.

In that instance, she refused to serve us... hopefully she was having an off day, but a terrible experience and the restaurant should be accountable for such a negative experience.

Customers, you judge...

IGNORANT or RACIST? Either way, it’s an unacceptable restaurant.

We’re an Asian American couple, and this happened during our honeymoon in Scotland. The weather was awful, and this was the nearest restaurant to our Airbnb, so we gave it a try. BIG MISTAKE. The place was packed, and we were told to wait. When we were finally seated, they led us straight to the window, right next to another Asian guy loudly talking on the phone. Meanwhile, there were two or three empty tables inside, but we were told those were ā€œreserved.ā€

A white couple who arrived before us was immediately seated at one of those ā€œreservedā€ tables. Maybe it really was booked, but those tables stayed empty until closing, which didn’t sit right with me. Then another Asian couple came in and, surprise, they were placed right next to us by the window. All the Asian faces lined up front. Maybe for the restaurant’s DIVERSITY DISPLAY?

Those ā€œreservedā€ tables stayed empty until closing. While waiting for our food, we asked to move because the guy next to us was too loud. They told us to sit on an uncomfortable couch in the middle, which we did just to get away from that ridiculous setup.

Even when we checked out, the staff couldn’t bother to be polite. Cold, dismissive, and clearly ignorant. Whether it was RACISM or just pure STUPIDITY, it’s unacceptable. We’ve eaten all over Scotland, and this was the only place where we felt such a discriminatory and dismissive attitude. The food and coffee don’t matter when the staff have zero respect for...
