Really severely disappointed by our experience today. We had a baby shower booked in advance but it turned out they accepted another baby shower booking at the same time. Our party was relatively small but instead of putting us at one of their nice tables in the main area, we were put behind a curtain at the back of the restaurant where it looked like a staff room. There was no nice background for our pictures while celebrating this special day, had specifically booked Paper Mill because it’s so beautifully decorated everywhere else in the restaurant.

Normally the food is good, which most if it was but the soup was cold and there was no replacement offered or refund. We had preordered our meals, they didn’t allow party favour drinks at our table so everyone was to order and pay at the end for drinks, which everyone in our party was either pregnant or driving so it was just sodas we ordered.

The service was so appallingly slow, we had to get up to chase the staff several times. They even at one point started to clear our table then evidently forgot about us. We were waiting so long for a cake knife at the end that I had to leave my sisters shower without having the cake, which was specially made, because literally the service was that slow we were there for 2.5 hours at the point when I left and had only had two courses. The cold coffee at the end that I left because it was unacceptable topped it all off.

I complained to the manager upon leaving, then subsequently in my absence the restaurant offered a free round of drinks to the table, but it was the end of the meal and people were only drinking juice or water so there was no free round of drinks yet they still charged us for the sodas ordered with our meals!

Laughable. Won’t be back. Real shame because it was a...

Visited on Sunday night with 7 members of my family, we were accommodated by adding an extra person and were greeted by friendly waitress. Food was ordered, macaroni was bland and focaccia bread served was very hard, steak frites was ordered well done and arrived bloody and uncut this was returned to kitchen and appeared to have been sliced and then cremated I’d have thought meat would be cooked rested then sliced but not on this occasion. I ordered a burger and advised of tomato allergy that was noted and whole table asked about allergy’s which I thought good practice. My burger was so dry it was difficult to bite and chew the bun was very hard and lettuce additional cheese was only company this overcooked lump of meat arrived with (no sause or onion)I asked my son to taste and he too found the meat to be so dry it was inedible, I covered my food with napkin and looked for waitress who hadn’t checked to see how food was at any point. brown sause that had been forgotten had to be packed for again and When I did manage to see waitress they were both happily drinking milkshakes in service area I think oblivious to duties required in service. I was given eventually told the burger had been removed of my bill as I did not want a replacement, to discover it was still on the bill. The 2 female waitresses were polite but I don’t believe they had and support interms of management as their actions showed. The tables were very sticky. Fish and chips were good !! But meat left a lot to be desired I would not recommend. I spoke to female I guess manager and told her my concerns who advised a staffing issue, not up to standard and left disappointed and hungry. I really loath negative reviews but it was very basic things...

Food was great. No complaints on that front however the service was not great.. after our meal we asked to have another drink along with the dessert menu. Menu arrived 15 minutes later, drinks did not. Decided against dessert as we had waited so long to be seen and asked for bill. We had a gift voucher and there was problems finding the gift amount. We only discovered this after 15 minutes of waiting without anyone actually telling us. Another 10 minutes pass and we leave the table to see whats happening with the bill. Standing for yet another 10 minutes at the serving/till area looking like a right couple of plums while staff avoided us. Eventually we sat down at the closest table to wait it out and got moved on as it was booked. The staff were pleasant when you managed to pin one down but they seriously need to work on communicating with customers. We were so embarrassed at something which was not our fault as we were ignored constantly. Eventually WE sorted the issue by getting the person who gave us the voucher to send the original gift email which included the gift amount. It was 40 minutes from asking for the bill to actually paying it. Not even a...

The Paper Mill - totally unplanned visit here last week and actually the result of just asking Google for somewhere to eat on our route - anyway, what great fortune as the food and service was absolutely superb! The restaurant is set just off the River Esk in Lasswade - it has dedicated car parking and is wheelchair accessible, with double doors to the front and staff that will happily help you if required. We arrived at lunchtime and it was pretty busy - a good sign - but were seated in the front portion of the building. Beautifully appointed and a large bar; many tables and a good sized beer garden. The whole place was immaculately clean and overall I'd say very welcoming. Food was excellent - modern takes on traditional dishes and priced relatively well given the current climate. Main dishes £15-20. Overall just really great - will be back for sure!

Really great location with good views, atmosphere in the restaurant was great and the customer service was top class! Food was good, apart from the burger, and have an excellent selection of food to choose from. I had chicken yakitori skewers & Rock salt and chilli chicken wings from the bar snacks menu as my starter and then a beef burger with bacon and cheese. The actual burger was a let down in my opinion, was dry and over cooked but the skinny fries were cooked to perfection with no seasoning required. All in all I will be back to try other items on the menu as the group I was with had a vast variety of food which all looked good and was highly recommended to me. Would have been 5 starts if the burger was juicier
