Sorry but not great. The Woodsman restaurant was recommended to us by a friend, so we decided to give it a try and to take advantage of the Eat out to help out scheme that offers up to £10 off per person this August.

I will start of by saying that the staff were awesome, very attentive and friendly. The food though was not anywhere near as good as we were told it would be.

My partners nacho starter was though very good, but my prawn cocktail left an awful lot to be desired. The prawns were sparse, tiny and of a very low quality. Obviously cheap frozen prawns and were rubbery and completely tasteless.

My partners main course lasagne, although of a quite good quality and tasty was unfortunately tiny. Served in a small, shallow dish and considering the £11.95 price it left an awful lot to be desired. The rather generic, tasteless chips did nothing to bolster the dish at all. My steak was cooked well but unfortunately was quite tough and lacked the flavour that one would expect of an extra matured 21 day old Scottish sirloin to have. I like my steak rare and it was rare. It was hot but tough and flavourless. The sauteed onion, peppers and mushroom that comes along with the platter were tasty but seemed to lack any mushroom and if there, must of been sliced so thin that it dissolved away to nothing. Again the generic chips were completely lacking in flavour and not great at all. So glad I paid the extra £3 for the onion ring side as at least they were quite good. I asked for English mustard but received what can only be described as cheap catering burger/hotdog mustard. Right colour at least but so lacking in real mustard flavour that it really tasted pretty awful.

My daughters kids chicken nuggets were very good quality indeed. Real chicken breast and cooked well too and her ice cream dessert was made special by the waitress, which was lovely of her to do. Unfortunately the chocolate flake did not taste like a Cadbury's flake and my other half knows her Cadbury's Flakes lol.

My partner really liked the tablet ice cream but I was quite disappointed with the caramel apple pie and most noticeably the lack of it lol. The slice was ridiculously small, which was disappointing as it tasted really good.

All in all, the food was OK, but for what would of normally cost £76.00, if it had not been for the "Eat out to help out scheme that offers up to £10 off per person this August deal" I would not of been happy at all. A meal that would of cost £76.00 for two adults and a three year old, with no alcohol and just two large soft drinks is really expensive for the quality of food we actually got. The final bill was £46.00 but I paid £54.00 as I still tipped £8 as the service really was very good and at the end of the day, it's not the servers fault that the food did not live up to our expectations.

To sum up, I would say the food would of been OK if it were pub grub and priced accordingly but as the Woodsman is a restaurant and charges restaurant prices, I feel the quality to price ratio was sadly lacking :( Perhaps we just visited on a bad...

First impressions weren't the best. Carpark a bit rough, with untidy areas around the edges.Had to walk past a store room on the way that also looked tatty with paper and cardboard on the window. Things improved on entering the restaurant. Clean, tidy and nicely decorated. Strange way of getting a table. As signage was not in view in entering the building. A busy waitress told us to come in. In a friendly manor. As we walked forward the bar came into view and a sign saying wait here to be seated. Ah that's better, but they need something at the door. Headed for bar and the same waitress said someone (she did mention a name, but I don't remember what it was) would be with us shortly. We didn't wait long. The girl asked how she could help. Table for two we asked for. She had a look in a diary I assumed, wrote something down and said this way please. I felt a bit uncomfortable as she never said anything until that point. Felt like she was going to say, sorry we don't have any. She showed us to a table, picking up Menus on the way, asked us to fill in a Covid locator form and asked if we would like to order drinks. I ordered a pint of diet cola. The waitress said we only have cans. So it would be two cans to make a large drink. I agreed, however if I had realised it would be over £5 for two cans then I would certainly only had the one. This in my opinion is very expensive. I ordered the Woodsman burger which sounded nice from the description. The menu probably had something for everyone, however the choice was a wee bit limited. We waited a reasonable amount of time on the food coming and the waitress was good at making sure you were happy. The food its self was excellent, which is obviously the most important point here and why the restaurant gets 4 stars. A wee bit more attention to detail and I'm sure they would score 5. Well done...

We decided to visited here on a Sunday (10th August) as we hadn’t been since last year. We left very disappointed. It would have been a lower rating if it wasn’t for the nice girl when we paid. She was lovely.

We arrived and to start with it wasn’t the friendliest of welcomes to say the least. Not a hello, how can we help you kind of thing. We were sat down at our table and a male server came over and said ‘anyone want to order some drinks’ not ‘Hello, would you like to order some drinks if your are ready’ His whole attitude was not nice at all and this continued throughout. He came to take our orders for food. Me and my partner asked for the fajitas but we asked for no onions and were told that this was not possible (with no explanation as to why) I then explained that we had got it without onions the previous time and this was no problem last time. Again I was told no. I then asked what if this as an allergy which I got an abrupt reply of ‘You would just need to pick something else then’ Sorry but this is not the attitude you have with customers!

We then had to pick all the onions out of the fajitas when they came. Chicken was cheap strips, like frozen chicken as well. Such a disappointing visit compared to last year. Staff were nice and the food was lovely the last time. Menu is very limited too. I think it needs a wee update with different things. If you have an allergy it seems they aren’t interested to accommodate you so I would bear that in mind if you are thinking about visiting here. Please retrain some staff in how to speak to customers. This is the first time I have eaten at this restaurant. I am not local to Scotland and was visiting a friend. The restaurant itself was lovely. Some restaurants try and cram as many tables as they can in an area but this was nicely spaced out. Felt relaxed as we ate. The food was amazing. Best food I have tasted for a while. The staff were polite and friendly and started a conversation with us. Definitely recommend if you are in the area! Edit... 25th August 2019. I have now been here twice. Second time round was just as pleasant as the first. They had a new young lad working there. Didnt catch his name but he had ginger hair. He was very helpful and polite with us. I was being fussy and didnt want my steak to arrive on a cast iron skillet and he checked with the kitchen for me to see if it was fine to have it on a normal plate (it was). The steak was beautiful. Wouldnt say it was worth £20 but I enjoyed it.

We booked a table at The Woodsman for our first meal out after lockdown during the Eat Out to Help Out campaign. The staff were friendly and explained all the rules in place. Tables were well spaced out within the restaurant. We had the mozzarella sticks and haggis to start, steak and veggie burger for main and waffles and cheesecake for desert. The portions were large and the food tasted great!
