Melbourn Fish & Chips — Restaurant in South Cambridgeshire

Today we visited the local chippy while staying in the area , we love a good chippy tea! The fish was cooked to order, which we appreciated, and the batter was nice and crispy. However, the fish batter itself was quite oily, which let it down a bit. That said, it was thick, flaky, and clearly fresh.

The chips were cooked well and served piping hot, just how we like them.

Being from up north and living near Whitby, we naturally compare everywhere to Whitby’s famous fish and chips. So far, no place has quite matched up — including this one. If the fish had been left to drain for a minute or two after frying to reduce the excess oil, it could have made a big difference.

On a positive note, there were plenty of staff on hand, which helped keep things moving...

Decided to grab some fish and chips instead of a sandwich at the co-op. Was not disappointed.

Ordered cod and chips with a fish cake. Was told the fish would take about 10mins, so was ok with that

My rule of thumb for fish and chips: Good fish and chips does not need more than salt and vinegar. And this delivers

This was the nearest fish and chips to where we were camping in Foxton. The fish just didn't feel freshly battered and it didn't flake into big chunks like my local Sheffield chippy. The chips were a bit limp and weren't anything to write home about. Mushy peas ok Also got 5 not 6 battered mushrooms as advertised which again weren't fresh, I assume they came out of the freezer, and were smaller in size than I was expecting.
