Ye Olde Smokey House — Restaurant in South Hams

my partner and I visited on a saturday evening, we were greeted promptly by friendly staff. All the staff seemed to work well as a team, the young chap who served us was friendly and prompt in taking our order. we ordered two starters, essentially a prawn cocktail and then also mushrooms and bacon in a garlic creamy sauce with bread.

The prawns were bland and tasted as if they had been frozen, the bread and salad was good though. My mushroom starter was gorgeous, really tasty and well cooked. The starters only took 10 minutes to arrive which was impressive considering it was a saturday night.

Our mains were a rack of ribs with chips and salad, the ribs were beautifully cooked but the sauce was very overpowering, very sweet and tangy. The chips were pretty good.

The drinks we ordered came with a free refill which was ace.

My main was lamb chops and mash with gravy and veg from the carvery, the veg was nice but not as hot as it could have been, the lamb and mash and gravy was exquisite and a generous portion size although you definitely paid for it at £17.99 - i was happy to pay that considering how good it was and I’m hard to please!!

The ladies loo was a little untidy with one of the seats hanging on crooked. A little improvement in the loos would really help the overall feel of the venue.

Fantastic place for food and carvery. We made contact before arriving and as we were running late due to an accident on the roads we called ahead and our table was held for us. We were made to feel very welcome as soon as we arrived. We were seated and drinks brought to us promptly. Our waitress was brilliant, she saw to our every need and the food was amazing. We had carvery and we both had pork which literally fell apart as it was carved. Which is just the way we like it. Generous servings and all the vegetables were cooked to perfection along with the potatoes. We couldn't resist the cakes on the display and we were provided with a takeaway box as we were pushed for time. We did mention this all to the bar staff, but credit where credit is due, this place has improved from good to amazing since we came last. Booked here for a sunday lunch meet up with family.. it has a large restaurant plus some smaller rooms as well. It was getting busy when we arrived and filled up while we were there Only a few people drinking during our stay We chose to eat the carvery, which seemed to be what most were doing but the was an al la carte menu as well From the carvery there was Beef, Turkey or Gammon and a selection of very nicely cooked vegetables and at £10.50 extremely good value. There was a large selection of desserts , which mostly were homemade and large portions There were three beers on draught but served far to cold Service was extremely good. We had no wait being seated, getting drinks or in getting our food This place has a very large car park so never a problem to park.
