19TH MARCH 2025.
‘Wandering Wednesday’ this week took both Hubby Neil and I to a new place….. ‘The Wheatsheaf’ in St. Helens. I proper olde Worlde pub full of sport memorabilia and photos of local businesses of days gone by, there is bad subsidence with all of the mining of yesteryear’s and feels like your walking down a slope but it definitely adds to the character and charm of the old pub….. it still has the old waitress service button bells on the walls around the top of seating areas….. where years ago you pushed the button to alert the waitress to your table to take your drink orders….. they may still work but I didn’t press it!!! Tempted though!!! Another great pub that serves proper homemade food and plenty of it too!
Both went straight to entrée’s:
Neil had proper homemade chunky chips, peas, fresh carrots and a HUGE suet pudding…… with thick, rich, glossy gravy and more in a little jug on the side. I had had the mixed grilled!!! It was HUGE! ‘Desperate Dan’ would have struggled to eat it….. Neil had to help me out eating it……and this is why! Rib eye steak, a full chicken breast, a massive pork chop, thick slice of gammon, two sausages, onion rings, tomato, mushrooms, black pudding, chunky chips and two eggs!! I ordered a side of peppercorn sauce and a wheelbarrow to take me out in!!! Waiting time was cooking time, the two ladies that served us, sadly I forgot to ask their names, were very attentive, polite and made us feel welcome…… Thank you…xx
This is an old pub, with old decor but that’s the style of this establishment…… the food was amazing and as you can guess, VERY filling, we were going to have starter too 😳thankfully we decided not too!!! Excellent choices on the menu, something for everyone.
Would we go back? That’s a...
Read moreOne guest called Noreen Desmond seems to think that a busy food establishment can get fantastic food out in less than 30 minutes. Well this place makes everything from scratch and when busy the food can take a while but thats to be expected. If you want food quick go to another establishment that fries or microwaves everything from either the freezer or already cooked by a supplier and heated up. You should also take at least 30 minutes to consume your food and if the home cooked chips came with salt and vinegar on them their would be plenty of complaints. That's what the salt cellar and condiments are there for, so you can season your food to your liking.
Now this place is absolutely fantastic and they accommodate your every need as best as possible. I for one appreciate the effort that goes into every dish here. Someone peels a lot of spuds and hand cuts them for all those homemade chips and roast potatoes as most restaurants these days use frozen fries and roast potatoes so not fresh at all. If you want a great meal that a lot of effort has gone into it with fresh produce and cooked like at home then this is your place and Karen's need not visit if all they can do is moan as if she thinks this food is bad then god knows what she thinks of thousands of other places that...
Read moreUpon entering The Meatsheath I was greeted by a boneless boy laying limp in a wheelchair. Using what seemed like his last breath he muttered his name: Tommy. I cleared my throat and penetrated the vulnerable boys' eardrums with the gritty vibrations being let rip from my vocal chord: "Green. The name is Hector Green". I stuck out a hand though looking back on the state of the boy I realise now the inensitivity of my actions. To my dismay he offered a hand and led me to the toilets.
"Your meat -- it's mine now" he muttered and proceeded to tear the loincloth from my body. The irony and humiliation was too much to bear knowing that I was stood in a place named the way it was with my meat very much withdrawn from its sheath.
Between the unending pounding of my flesh I managed to muster enough strength to release a moan: "Tommy... please!". My cries fell on deaf ears (both literally and metaphorically) as he didn't let up.
I felt a rush and within seconds my meat ruptured releasing a barrage of viscous mayonnaise like the...
