George & Dragon — Restaurant in Stafford

I had a honey roasted hock ham sandwich for £5 - except there wasn't any ham hock!!! It was just bog standard sliced ham. It tasted nice and the bread was nice and fresh but it wasn't as described in the menu. Couple next to us had exactly the same issue as they ordered the same sandwich. We both mentioned it as feedback to the waitresses but nothing happened. Please, if you are only serving sliced ham sandwiches just say so upfront on the menu to avoid any confusion or misrepresentation? My partner had the veggie chicken burger for £9. This was very very basic - and looked just thrown together. No salad in the burger to make it pretty either! The accompanying chunky chips were not nice and didn't taste good - they made my partner wretch at one point and she had to go the loo! Not a very impressive first visit, but we liked the indoor environment, seating and decor!

I didn't even know the George & Dragon was a Marstons! No campaign on my part to target Marstons pubs with negative reviews which is what you're implying - it's just a coinciidence and just the way these pubs are currently performing sadly! LOL Think I've only been in two other Marstons - at the Marquis of Granby in Penkhull the food was terrible and at the New Broom in Checkley the food was reasonably Good (4 stars). By far the worst Christmas meal my whole family and myself have ever been served. At £52 per head I expected all the trimmings but little did I know how incompetent the management and staff are. The table was booked for 2:30pm but the starters didn’t arrive for an hour which were all cold, when our main arrived I was astonished. It was not only freezing cold, with 2 sparse pieces of meat, there was hardly any veg, a flat Yorkshire pudding that was 3cm in diameter and hard as a rock, 1 cremated tiny pig in blanket served with beef gravy despite beef not being on the menu. The were no sauces or salt and pepper not even cranberry and as I said before this is at £52 per head. Every table around us had the same experience and the few staff that was there agreed with the customers. The manager or chef never came to see us or anyone else to apologise, offer a complimentary drink or to explain why things were so bad. I eventually found the manager where with no apology I was told we’d get a full refund which is was not happy with as he’d ruined my entire family’s Christmas Day. Very disappointing experience. One star given and that’s being generous. We should have been concerned when on arrival to find the place empty of customers or any other diners, it was after all 3pm on a Saturday. We ordered our drinks and chose a table, looked over the menu and chose our food. On arrival of the food confirmed to me the reason why this place was empty. Very poor presentation, poor quality, poor service and cold. Had to ask for cutlery and condiments. One meal in particular the (vegetable & lentil chilli) raised a complaint, the ratio of ingredients was disproportionate being far too much of the cheep ingredients rice and tortillas to chilli which was served in the tiniest dish I’ve ever seen and also microwave within an inch of its life leaving it inedible. The complaint unfortunately wasn’t resolved satisfactorily. This particular meal was returned and rightly refunded. I suggest the management of the George & Dragon invest in Customer Service training course for this particular staff member who was rude and unwilling to resolve this valid complaint.
