After the visit of Churnet valley railway, we wanted to have a lunch. We didnt book for a table on sunday roast and realised no proper table for 3 of us. We've been led to 1st floor with high chair and big projector screen for football. We ordered at the bar and foods came pretty quick and in a generous portion at this cost c.£12 for a portion of beef sunday roast was absolutely rare in this current era. The main point is that those foods were heartily made and so yummy. Plus ales and drinks we were well fed and absolutely glad we picked this pubs among a lot of them in the area.

Nice treat for lunch. Great little pub, friendly staff, nice decor, very clean. Good selection of cask ales and lagers. Food delicious, all homemade and good sized portions. Ordered from the specials board, steak and kidney pudding and venison burger, both very tasty, good portions and real chips. Nice fresh salad with the burger. Will definitely be going back. Parking a bit tight on the car park and narrow road leading up to it to be aware of. Great local find.

We had a lovely visit to The Black Lion in Cheddleton. The pub had a lively, welcoming atmosphere that added to the charm of the evening. We ordered the steak and ale pie and the fish and chips—both dishes were hearty and delicious. Parking was a bit of a challenge, but it was well worth it for the food and experience. All in all, a great visit—we’d definitely come back!

Had the Sunday roast and chose beef. Before this, the last time I had a roast dinner here was probably 5 years ago. Compared to previously the latest meal portion size was a LOT smaller. The plate was less crammed with various veggies but still just about adequate. I prefered the meal from 5 years ago. On this visit the beef was tender and a reasonable portion, the yorkie was beautifully cooked, of a large size and delicious and the gravy was flavoursome but I could've done with more of it! The disappointment was with the roast potatoes. The roasties didn't taste great, there were just two small pieces and they looked anemic and were not crispy. The other veggies were okay but I did not like the red cabbage which tasted strange like cinnamon. What is that doing on a roast dinner?? Drinks-wise I was disappointed with the draught lagers available here and the high prices! Where's the Stella or Aspalls draught cider?? As you can see I'm a bit of a food analysist and overall the meal just made the Good rating but was NOT Excellent. I would like to see MORE detailed glowing food reviews on this site before I return to this venue. In the meantime I'll keep going to Ipstones for my meat roast where the veggies are all you can eat and the meal costs about...

The black lion is someone where I’ve always wanted to visit but never had the chance to go for different reasons.. How ever when a few friends suggested going here I jumped at the chance.

Wednesday night at 7 and the place was buzzing. Every table was filled, the atmosphere was lively, but not in a loud way. It was great.

If you are going to go, then I recommend booking a table, We did and it’s a good job else we wouldn’t have got in.

Food was excellent and the staff were next...
