Unfortunately and fortunately we had a great experience up until 11.25pm .My wife and I visited our daughter and her long term boyfriend who live and work in the area. I have recently retired and my wife is a nurse. We travelled from Scotland to celebrate Christmas with them before the 25th. On the Saturday of the 21.12.24 We arrived at the Crown at at approx 6.30 pm and had 2 rounds of drinks costing approx £50.00 we had a couple of games at pool as a family and really enjoyed the games. We then went across the road to an arranged chinese meal at 8 pm which was most enjoyable. After the meal we returned to the Crown where we has a cracking time. We played at darts even though one one the shafts were broken and the bar staff advised they had no more shafts so we played with 2 darts to make do what was available and we enjoyed ourselves. We had 5 more rounds at the bar and a memorable evening was being had . I paid and played 21 songs on the jukebox to enhance the evening for all. Nearing the end of our evening I decided to go to the bar at 11.25pm to be advised that the bar was now closed as they were now cashing up. I also asked in the lounge were we were playing at darts and I was advised by the barman that he cannot serve us as instructed by his boss. The patrons that we were talking in the lounge found that strange as were the guys having a smoke outside that we were speaking to when waiting for our taxi. However I have had to accept the outcome as the Landlord is the licensee but one for the road would have finished off our night perfectly. My family and i were quiet and no trouble whatsoever and relished the enjoyment and atmosphere of the surrounds. Spent approximately £160-£180 in total at our visit. NOTE. The Internet says the pub opened till 12pm. We ended up going back to the Crown Plaza hotel where we were staying and made welcome, but we would have preferred to stay at the Crown even though just for the additional half hour as the customers were nice...
Read moreNice looking local pub, had many a good meals in the past until Saturday 2nd of September 2017. Ordered the small fish, chips and mushy peas and the honey roast ham chips and garden peas both were none star meals although I gave one star for the fish only. Fish was cooked lovely but the chips were wedges with skins on and very dark dirty brown colour as for the mushy peas WELL! How about a pathetic effort to disguise garden peas mashed with a fork then micro zapped till they were dry to the touch with a coated film over them. The honey roast ham chips and peas well the good point was the garden peas they were garden peas the chips as before, but the honey roast ham was a half inch chunk that was under cooked the fat was slightly off white and I'm sure it oinked when the fork was stuck into it mainly to keep it running off the plate. We did tell the waitress how upset we both were after she had asked if we had enjoyed our meal and offered us a drink of some as to compensate but free drinks all afternoon would not have kept me there. I shall have to hear excellent comments before we...
Read moreI’ve been coming to this pub for 20+ years and it is a great place to call my local. V friendly and welcoming. I’ve read a couple of negative reviews here and will address them both. “They let in Travellers...”. In the years that I have been coming here, this has happened only once and it was recently. 4 chaps who kept themselves to themselves, were courteous and respectful. A bit excitable but nothing more. The Crown doesn’t discriminate. Had they, or any customer, been out of order, the pub would deal with it with support from its locals. Everyone treated equally! Something about prices....? This is geography!!!! If you don’t want to pay the prices, go holiday in Middlesbrough! It’s ‘bog standard’ pricing for this area. And no one has mentioned that the landlord is a Stoke City fan....so you always leave feeling top of the world with a sense of superiority....even if you...
