Ego at The Hartshead Inn — Restaurant in Tameside

Visited on 12th November so they’d only been open a few days. Given it 3 stars as there were some niggly teething problems.

Table wasn’t ready on time - not a huge issue as we had another drink in the bar, but this could be improved.

They had ran out of Yorkshire puddings. This was meant to be included in the Sunday roast dishes. It was only when one of our party mentioned it that they explained they’d ran out. They gave us a dauphinoise side dish instead but this was undercooked when it arrived.

We were in a private room with us being a large party. Lovely room with great promise but the speakers didn’t work so the music being played in the main restaurant couldn’t be played. Not a deal breaker but would’ve added to the atmosphere.

Cleaning spray and cloth left on the windowsill next to the table. Just an oversight I’m guessing but should’ve been put away before seating guests.

Ordered three hot drinks at the end - two arrived but one came a lot later, meaning the other two had finished theirs by the time the third arrived.

The bar had ran out of white rum.

On their own, these are just minor things but together, there are too many to ignore. The dishes aren’t the cheapest so everything should be spot on when you’re paying a premium.

The positives:

Most of the food was lovely.

The children’s menu is brilliant - not just your run of the mill pizza and chicken nuggets.

All the staff are really friendly and clearly want to do a good job.

The decor is fresh and welcoming.

They look like they’ve updated the outside area at the back which will be lovely in summer.

This restaurant is 10 minutes drive from us and we were really excited when we knew it was changing hands a reopening as something new.

This review is not to put any blame on anything - more from a constructive point of view to help improvements.

We took a party of 15 people to the Hartshead Inn Ego on Friday 28th for Lunch. We booked 2 weeks previously to the event with Michelle and elected for the private room which holds the numbers requested. We agreed to establish each person’s meal for starters and main meals and presented this one week before the event. Michelle advised that she would be looking afterwards on the day. Two people attending were disabled and required the use of the back door situated at the lower level car parking at rear of building. Everyone arrived at Ego 10 -15mins before we sat down at 12am. Michelle was excellent, not only in the planning, but also ensured any changes to the menu were given to the kitchen brigade before sitting down. Michelle was great ensuring the 2 disabled people were seated first and then everyone else. Michelle then managed service of meals for each course which again was excellent and bobbed in periodically to check that everything was ok. I have to say the whole process was seamless so well done to everyone involved. I think fair to say that everyone felt that the food quality and portions were extremely good throughout the meal so thanks to members of the kitchen brigade. Indeed just one observation by two people related to the goats cheese dish was that it would have been nice to have bread or similar with the dish. Finally I would say that when we came the Hartshead Inn a couple of years ago the service was very slow and it was a concern for us.
