Carriages — Restaurant in Teignbridge

My husband and I went here for the second time during our holiday. Our first experience was lovely, we were served by a really lovely young lady unfortunately we didn't get her name. The food was really good as recommended by a friend. Because we had such a good experience the first time we decided to go again during our holiday. Sadly the second time around was not so good. We had arrived ten minutes early ( which wasn't a problem on our previous visit) this time around the person who booked us in so to speak was really rude! We apologized for being early and in a very rude way she said " you're too early you will have to sit in the bar until it's time" it was very embarrassing as the bar was full of people. This I have to say was the second and last time we will visit. I have worked in customer service before and would never speak to customers the way this lady did, she totally ruined our evening. A big shoutout to the hostess, sorry I didn't get her name. She greeted us with a warm smile and ensured we got a table by the window, just as we requested and also read in the notes that it was our anniversary so she put a couple of balloons on the table for us. It made our night feel extra special. The food was well presented and full of flavour. It was nice to see it had a nice choice for vegetarians. Our waitress was friendly and cheerful. The restaurant and bar is nicely decorated throughout with lovely fresh flowers that are pooping with colour. This is the restaurant of the Brend hotel at Matford Exeter and it’s lovely, recently refurbished during lockdown. The food is honest and good, the staff appear to enjoy their work and work hard. I have to pick up on a couple of small points: Why no long spoons with a tall latte? :) My wife is disabled and the no step entrance is up a steep ramp and once you get to the top you have to navigate tables and chairs on the path or step down onto the grass, then up back onto the path, then the level entrance is the exit and you have to mount steps again to get into the restaurant- so come on - think a bit more and provide easier options pls!
