A Lovely Family Meal in Newton Abbot with a Few Small Details to Tweak

We recently dined at a lovely restaurant in Newton Abbot and had a generally wonderful experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, especially the lady behind the bar who immediately acknowledged our 2-year-old son. It’s always nice when staff go the extra mile, and her kindness stood out to us.

There was a bit of initial confusion when we were told we’d have to wait 15 minutes to be seated and were directed to the bar to order drinks. However, after our drinks were poured right in front of us, we were seated almost immediately. Within no time, we were handed the menus, and it became clear that the wait wasn’t going to be long at all.

When it came time to order, I wasn’t sure what to get, so I asked our server for a recommendation. She suggested a dish featuring roast chicken with potatoes, carrots with bacon, and cabbage smothered in a rich white sauce and gravy. Although I can’t remember the exact name, the dish was absolutely delicious—comforting and hearty with great flavor. The gravy was super rich, though personally, I think it could have been mellowed out a bit. But that’s just a small preference! The presentation was also beautiful, served on a large white plate, making it even more appetising.

The only slight downside was that the food was warm rather than piping hot. It wasn’t a major issue but worth noting.

For our son, we ordered the fish goujons with chips and peas from the kids’ menu, and it was a generous portion that was presented very well.

We also opted for dessert. My husband chose the brownie with honeycomb ice cream, which he enjoyed with no complaints. I went for the sticky toffee pudding, but unfortunately, it was quite dry and lacked enough sauce. A bit more sauce would’ve made it much better—it didn’t quite hit the mark for me, and I wouldn’t rush to order it again.

All in all, it was a lovely meal with a cozy, kid-friendly atmosphere. We’d definitely return for another visit, though I’d perhaps skip the sticky toffee...

We had called to book and im willing to accept that I should have explained one of our party struggles with walking up stairs. It was 2 support workers treating the 3 lads we support to some pub grub before we headed back to Nottingham on the Friday morning. We were situated in a dark corner up a staircase and the initial service was professional and polite. The food itself was well cooked and very tasty with decent portions. Our issues came when we attempted to pay for our bill. As the lads we support to live independently require receipts to track there spending we asked for said receipts and this is where our evening went from thoroughly enjoyable to feeling as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. It was as if they couldnt wait to get us out the place and out the door. Shame really. In hindsight we should have sat outside and just pooled all the lads money together and paid it as one bill. Left a sour taste in the mouth on what had been a wonderful week in Devon. The lads in particular are very adept at picking up bad vibes and 2 of them became upset when we drove home and had to be reassured that it...

My wife and I took my mother in law here for mothers day.The table was booked for 3pm.We arrived about 40 minutes early so not surprisingly our table was occupied and we were asked to wait.

We were served drinks at the bar.

At 3 o'clock we were told our table was still not ready and we would have to wait 15 minutes as the table occupants were having coffee.

Another fable available opposite the one we had booked and we were asked to take that one which we did.

The people who were occupying what should have been our table were still there for st least another 30-40 minutes.

The place was busy and I am not sure what would have happened had there not been a cancellation

There is a balancing act between annoying a group being asked to vacate a table and a family with a pre-booking with a specific time being asked to wait a long time.

That being said the staff are friendly and hard working and the food, especially the selection of vegetables are very good. The setting is beautiful and the prices...

We had a 60th birthday meal here, at the weekend with a party of 10 of 10 - including 2 small children. We had the room upstairs to ourselves and we went in early to decorate. It was a lovely space, nice and quiet. The food was beautiful -my gluten free pizza was the nicest I have had in a long while. The portion sizes were good, we were all so full up by the end, everyone ate everything! The service was great, friendly, prompt timing and organised, but not rushed. The setting was beautiful, all the gardens around the restaurant were in full bloom and it was buzzing with locals having a drink with friends in the sunshine. Will highly recommend and will be back another time. Can't believe we have lived in South Devon all this time and never been! Thank you :)
