I am only allowed to mention one date but this review covers my stays in December 2024, January, February, March April, May, June and July of 2025. That I return every month suggests of courser that I am more than happy with my Rising Sun experience.||First of all, booking is easy when you go through the direct booking route or I sometimes contact Karen and Ruth at the hotel and they do the rest. A few days before my arrival, Ruth gets in touch to check my restaurant reservations. These ladies are helpful and efficient, and always so friendly.||The beautiful view from the hotel is legendary and I get to see how it changes with the seasons. Many times this years I have I have walked up Cleeve Hill, to the rear of the hotel, for views from higher levels.||Whichever room that I have is always well presented. The housekeeping is brilliant. On my latest trip, I noted that my bath was full after thirty seconds. It is a lovely feature of this hotel that all room have baths, a rarity these days.|I pretty near know the menu. Everything that I have ordered has been perfect. The chefs really know how to cook a steak to perfection. The lamb shank and boeuf bourgignon are so tender that a knife isn't needed. The baked camembert starter is wonderful. The other day I tried the beef and ale pie: it was glorious and was big enough to share with others. I am a little unadventurous with the desserts but can recommend the excellent crumble and the Eton mess sundae.||Now for the jewel in the crown, the outstandingly good staff. How amazing they all are. Over the past eight months I have seen two stars move on and I wish Lewis and Tom well in their new positions. During my last five night stay I was blessed to be served at dinner by the ultra-professional Jake, one year on from his debut, the lovely and perfect Oscar, Lily and Ava and the newly appointed Reece, a real gem. Their service was flawless, making the dining experience one to treasure. My breakfasts were looked after by the charming and helpful Miley and the maestro of all he surveys, Bexley. The Manager, Simon, is rightly proud of his staff. They have been appointed and trained superbly. ||My aim is to see out the year with further monthly visits. What wonderful establishment this is, my...
Read moreStayed here for a family wedding. The good bits were….. The room was lovely, had a great view and was clean. The bed was really comfortable. What staff I did come into contact with were mainly friendly and helpful. Here’s why I gave it a 3…..when I walked from the bar area into the room we were having the reception, I had a glass of wine in my hand that the staff saw me carrying. When seated at the table I was asked if I’d like red or white wine. I asked for white but didn’t get any as my glass from the bar was already on the table. When I asked for a glass I was told a second would be given during the meal. I pointed out I’d not had my first as I’d paid for the one already on the table, and was then given a glass from the bottle being given out. I was made to feel like I was trying to get an extra glass out of the bride and groom when that wasn’t the case. When it came to getting wine for the toast, my husband didn’t have a glass set out at his placement. He was at the toilet so I asked for a glass for him, the waitress said yes no problem, but then walked away and never came back. Given how I’d been treated over the wine before, I didn’t bother asking anyone else. Breakfast the following morning, I asked for a full English, it came minus a sausage but trying to find someone to tell was impossible so I didn’t bother. Another tables came with no eggs and had to be brought out on a separate plate. After finishing my first cup of coffee, I asked if I could have another. I was told it would be a few minutes, but again, it didn’t arrive. When it came to checking out there was no one on reception and dispute ringing the number for staff, no one appeared. The hotel has such a beautiful view and for me, was let down by the few minor details and...
Read moreI have been going to the Rising Sun since my mum and dad used to take me there as a child some 40 years.
Today as I often do I went for a walk with my wife and dog up the hill and came back for lunch.
Sunny day so sat outside, went to order food only to be told that they no longer serve food in the garden, when I asked why the barman said as it had rained the day before staff are now not allowed on the grass area as a staff member had broken their arm after falling over last week.
Questioning this I asked why if it’s so dangerous why am I, my wife and often my children allowed on the grass area and his reply was “you do this at your own risk” what a joke. As NO signs say this a breach of health and safety rules.
This would also explain why so many wasps were around as every single table had empty glasses on as obviously staff are now not allowed to clean tables.
I would suggest that green king invest some serious money in levelling the garden and making it safe for staff and patrons alike.
We reluctantly went inside to have our lunch only to find that they did not have a full menu as the delivery had not come the day before and somehow this was made to feel like it was my fault for ordering food that they didn’t have!!!
Would recommend for a drink but anything else...
