Ok. So I was a late Sunday lunch. Around 5.30pm ish. Looked for a carvery in the area and this popped up. So took a drive as reviews are good. We came in, asked for a table for two and were duly sat on a table of our choice. The young girl took our drink orders and left. We found that when sat the table had a big wobble and there was a draft, so on her return we asked to move to the next table. She was very accommodating and moved us the cutlery and even the candle. Then we waited. No menu, other than what was casually written on the chalk board. Another girl returned with another guest who sat on our original table and she took their order. At this point I popped to the bar to ask about a menu to find it was only the chalk board. Ok, so we had been in the building nearly 20 minutes by this point and could of ordered had we been told. So any way another girl came over and took our order, very polite and concise. A few minutes passed and the sauces came to the table. Probably about 15 minutes later the food came out. Bear in mind it was late in the day, the meat was cooling. My meat was beef and was cooked well through. My wife had lamb. All the veg was very hot and reasonably fresh. For me the food wasn't worth waiting for, it was simply ok. And with the wait for ordering probably had dampened my view of the venue. Wouldn't go out of my way again?

! No vegan options ! No vegetarian options except a dairy-loaded starter ! Zero dairy-free desserts The kitchen were kind enough to make me a collection of vegan items (portobello mushrooms, boiled veg, (tiny) salad and chips - but it was seriously hard work getting there, as the waiter refused to ask the kitchen to advise on what they might put together for me, rather he insisted that I told them what I wanted. Without knowing what’s in the kitchen, how am I supposed to know what your chefs can and can’t do? In 2019 with zero cruelty-free items on the menu, this is clearly not an up-to-date food & beverage establishment. I still don’t understand why restaurants think they’re doing anyone any favours by poisoning their customers 🤣 I give it 3 stars because the ambience was pleasant enough (despite the SERIOUSLY OUTDATED cheesy, romantic 80’s pop classics) and the kitchen eventually came through with a pleasant result in the end, but the 2 stars were lost for 1) zero choices for ethical eaters and 2) too much like hard work trying to get my (simple) request through to the kitchen.

Visited Jun2021 after a 10 mile walk. Sat outside in the evening sun, gently serenaded by the sounds of Stansted Airport trying to convince the world that it was busy. This is a Greene King pub, so the quality is controlled, you know what you are going to get. And sure enough, we got a friendly welcome, good service, well-kept beer and good, middle-of-the-road pub grub. The pub is kitted out for families. In these slightly fake lockdown times, the pub has provided a large marquee for sheltered outside dining, filled with dozens of standard pub benches. There are also tables and chairs on a veranda for those of a middle-class persuasion. Menu is comprehensive. The prices are typical of Greene King in the East of England. The pub was fairly quiet on this locked-down Saturday evening, with perhaps 17 adults and 3 children visible from our garden seat during our meal. It is in a quiet village.

From local advertisements and web pages I thought this would be a good experience. I phoned to book. Someone lifted the phone and made no announcement. I ask is that the Ash Pub. The person said yes and I asked whether or not they did gluten free food. The answer was no but the person was willing to check with the chef. The answer was still basically no we do not have a gluten free menu but I am sure we can accommodate you needs. A booking was made and my wife and myself turned up at the appointed time. We both ordered Sunday roasts and I emphasized that I was gluten free. Did they have gluten free gravy. The answer was no. The waitress said that I could not have the Yorkshire pudding and I agreed that the meal was acceptable with it. When the meal arrived a huge Yorkshire pudding was on the plate.(This can easily contaminate other items on the plate). When I mentioned this the waitress asked: Did I want it removed? I said leave it on the plate and I will not eat it. After the meal we asked for the desert menu. Apparently there is no actual menu but deserts are chalked on a board. To see this I had to move from the table in order to see the board and relay back to my wife what was on the board. This entailed standing very close to tables with other diners which I personally thought was unacceptable. We ordered our deserts and because there were no gluten free products on the board I chose ice cream. 20 minutes after placing the order it had still not materialised. We went to the counter and told the waitress to cancel the deserts and paid for the two main courses. They did say that the deserts were ready and we could have them free. However we refused this offer. It was our first visit to this pub and sadly it will...

We spotted this pub a couple of weeks ago after driving through to visit Daisy Mays Farm and it looked so lovely we planned to book lunch another time. We visited The Ash yesterday for Sunday lunch and I just had to tell you about it! On entry we were warmly greeted. We had actually booked a table outside because the weather was so nice albeit a bit cold, and our children who have challenging needs often prefer it. Our waitress, made a table up just in case we changed our mind, and we gratefully accepted. A relative arrived and we were not expecting them to be so early, the pub immediately made sure a roast was available and to come out at the same time as ours despite already putting the order in. The food was delicious, massive portions of home cooked food. The highlight was the chicken pate and the Beef Wellington. The pub is bright and airy, with a welcoming log fire, decorated with model planes to capture the historic past. The garden is huge and you are able to see the planes take off from the airport. Nothing was too much for the staff especially our wonderful waitress, who was particularly attentive to the children. 100% recommend and look forward...
