Good, but by no means perfect. The food we had here was easily the best we experienced during our recent stay in Anglesey, but to be realistic, that bar isn't set particularly high, with most places on the island offering the usual generic pub grub.
Catch 22 meals will cost you 50% more than those places, so you have a right to expect something better. And, generally speaking, you'll get it, with a proper chef, not just a guy who wears chequered trousers and knows how to operate a microwave, fresh produce, attentive staff, excellent facilities and a great atmosphere. That's what paying a lot more than elsewhere buys you. The place is rammed and everyone seems to be happy - what's not to like?
Going by our experience, I would say a few basic, but very important things could make the experience even better.
If I'm paying £30 for a seafood linguinie main course, I expect the mussels to be properly dressed, ie grit free and I expect my food to be served on a hot plate, not a stone cold one. If I order an insalate Capresse starter, for £10+, I expect more than bland tasting supermarket tomatoes and a few blobs of mozzarella. And finally, if my wife and I have clearly finished our mains and the restaurant is half empty, I don't expect to see waitresses busily cleaning off and spraying down tables all around us, ready for the next day, for 10 minutes, rather than taking away our plates and offering us a pudding.
I'm a simple Midland lad - if I pay top dollar for something, I expect it to be a near perfect experience and our meal at Catch 22 wasn't, I'm afraid.
For the record, I would also say that now the size of the restaurant has increased, attracting far more customers, the parking situation needs to be clarified with anyone who books. The parking bays at the back of the restaurant are clearly marked as being for another organisation, so no one parks in them, but apparently there is no problem with Catch 22 customers using those bays in the evenings, or on Sundays?? The parking is tight down the side of the restaurant, with Catch 22 bays that, if used, can limit access to the rear of the restaurant by creating a bottleneck, so this is crucial information that needs to be relayed to customers, in order to encourage them to park at the rear, not down the sides. There is also an overflow car park, but that is further down the street. Perhaps this could all be conveyed to customers when bookings are confirmed.
To conclude, in my experience, having eaten here a few times, this is one of the best restaurants on the island, but, as I know from my own business, expanding an operation, whilst simultaneously maintaining the high standards that have put you in the position to be able to expand is a difficult trick...

Firstly, we have to mention the Broccoli and Ricotta Kataifi Pie. No wait, I'll get to that. First, the staff - they are extra special staff, friendly, lovely happy smiley staff. They make you feel welcome and wanted and actually made us feel like VIPs; they were so nice. Then the food... the food is amazingly good. You can tell it's fresh, it's local; we even saw deliveries coming in as we left from local fishmongers and ice cream makers.
I'm writing as fast as I can because I'm bursting to tell you about the Broccoli and Ricotta Kataifi Pie. However, bear with me for a moment because we had starters: Goats cheese croquettes for me and prawn focaccia for Mum - both were delightful to look at and tasted amazing. Piles of fresh, juicy prawns on freshly toasted focaccia, and the goats cheese croquettes were sublime. I already want to go back just for those starters!
NOW, I get to talk about the Broccoli and Ricotta Kataifi Pie. I've never had this kind of pie before - the top is like finely shredded, crispy, buttery pastry goodness. I didn't see a van delivering this, so I highly suspect it's ordered directly from Heaven or that the chef is actually an angel. The filling inside was light, creamy, and perfectly balanced with a touch of lemon. It's safe to say we've never tasted a pie quite like this before, and it left us longing for more... you have to try this pie. Mum had the char-grilled chicken breast on patatas bravas, and it was gorgeous (we taste each other's food), but my pie was the winner.
As if the starters and main course weren't enough to delight our taste buds, the desserts pushed us into foodie paradise. My mum, claiming to be too full, couldn't resist the allure of the Vanilla and Tonka Bean Creme Brulee. Watching her devour it in minutes was proof of its deliciousness. Meanwhile, I savored the Brownie with Chocolate Tuille and Mint Ice Cream, a divine combination that rounded off the meal perfectly. Had to undo the top button of my jeans tho on the drive home. Worth it
We cannot thank Catch 22 enough for providing us with such a wonderful afternoon. We're already planning our return visit to explore more of their exquisite menu, so lucky you're...
Read moreThis is gonna be long one but boy she is worth it!! This is by far my new favourite restaurant. Did we drive 1.5 hrs to try this place? Yes. Did we do it a second time because they blew my mind? Also, yes. This adorable place located in Anglesey, Wales, had great reviews and the photos people shared online were just… mouthwatering. The first time I tried it, the seafood platter for two, extra lemon butter prawns and chips and the dessert trio - delicious fruity drinks on the side. I have always refused to eat mussels because of the look and smell. Well I tried these and ate multiple. The calamari was tender and tasty, the prawn on toast was light and refreshing, the bream was fresh and fishy, the fried fish was flaky and crispy at the same time. I was obsessed immediately. The dessert trio was a snickers trio, a spiced caked and orange ice cream and crème brûlée. Each equally perfect. Zero. Complaints. Trip 2 we went in for the roast dinner. While not as awe inspiring to me as the seafood, the portions were fantastic, the variety of foods meant I never got bored and was always trying new combinations. The cheese starter was rich and decadent. Almost too much so but two was plenty for me. But the greatest part… the peach and raspberry dessert. I don’t have the words to describe.. I was overly full and feeling quite heavy from eating more than my body was wanting me to … when the dessert came out. OMG… it was light and airy, creamy but rich, sweet but tangy. Chunks of real peach hidden at the bottom. It was one of those moments when you just know… you’ve eaten one of the best things of your entire life. Catch 22 is a family run restaurant (I didn’t know at the time) that is always busy and no wonder. The service was great, the staff were lovely, the food was out of this world. The next time I’m in the UK I am making the trek over, no question about it. Hell I might even fly over just to go there. 10/10 absolutely incredible. Looking forward to trying the rest of the...
